Recently found a VPC-SA laptop that is in good condition for free, but is missing the HDD and ribbon cable.
I purchased a DVD caddie that will hold a HDD/SSD and plan to use it as the primary drive.
Had anyone done this and are there any problems with this idea other than I will not have the use of the DVD player until I can locate the ribbon cable for the factory drive location.

Never mind..... I answered my own question....
Plus I was able to locate the ribbon cable on EBay...
So now I have two HDDs installed.

Congrats :) Now you can put cheap small SSD (64GB or above) in one slot and leave big HDD for Documents which makes best upgrade.

To answer your question for future people: yes, you can *usually* boot from a HDD caddy in the optical disk bay. I have a Windows-boot HDD in the OD bay and a H'Tosh-boot SSD in the hard drive bay. I have run a similar set up in my previous 4 system without issues.
