    Hi,

My DVD/CD-ROM (RW DW-U54A) which supposedly reads from and writes to all types of DVD media (+ and -; R and RW) does not recognize blank DVDs. I am trying pre-installed DVD recording software "CLICK TO DVD" and "DRAG'N DROP CD+DVD" and both - with blank disks in the drive - give me prompts to insert a disk.

Am I missing something? Like these DVD disks that I just bought and tried a whole bunch of - JVC DVD-R (it says: for video/data) 4.7 GB 1-8x speed. Are they OK?

I never used my DVD/CD-ROM for DVD recording and now when I need it for this puprose I discover it non-functional.

    I would appreciate your help.

    Regards,

    Alex

I had a similar problem with my SZ160 the DVD uses a MatsuS.H.I.T.A (did it this way so the site filter doesn't hide the manufacturer name) 832-D Optical drive. My suggestion if the laptop is still in warranty (assuming you can't just return it) would be to contact Sony and have them repair it. Inconvienient I know but ultimately you paid for a fully functional laptop and that's what you should have.
In either case best of luck to you. ;)

A firmware and/or ide driver update may help. Try some different discs as well. Taiyo Yudens are the best blank media, both CDs and DVDs. Drag N Drop is packet writing software which is known to be flakey. I would suggest getting rid of it. Good Luck.
