Today at the end of school I took my notebook (Sony Vaio SR) out of my bag (special notebook bag) and got it out of stand by. I noticed that there were vertical lines on exactly the left half of the screen.

The lines are separated exactly equal and the color changes when images are moved. They are not of a certain color, perhaps a bit brown.

I know that it's not a software issue because I have the same problem in both operating systems. I also tried an external monitor and there were no problems there, indicating that it's an issue with the screen.

I don't recall any extra pressure or anything like that between when I saw it and used it before that, which was about a hour before that.

There are lots of threads about lines on screens on the internet but this one seems to be a little different so I thought I would post.

I bought my laptop around August last year (so not very old) and I've taken good care of it. I bought it from www.newegg.com but live in Spain now so there might be some difficulties with the warranty.

    I have attached three images.

Have you tried reinstalling the video driver? Delete from device manager, power off, on, and let it find a driver. Go to Sony esupport, download driver and install.

Like I said, the problem is in both operating systems (Ubuntu and Windows) so I highly doubt it's a video driver issue. Also, the lines appear at the very beginning (when the BIOS is loading).

If it's still under warranty, you may need to contact Sony for replacement.

Contact Sony here in Spain might be a problem because of the warranty as I bought my laptop in the US. Also these Spanish people here aren't exactly good, both in quality and speed.

I think it might be a cable issue, connecting the screen and video card. If it is I would have to open it up and have a look.

I would send it in for repairs, I can't remember the part number for this Screen, but someone once posted the two screens they use for the SR series. The 129E/B, which is what you have, uses the decent Toshiba panel (Matsu----a, you can figure out the name). It might be covered under warranty, it might not. I don't know. You could also contact Newegg if you are curious to see what they say about the issue.

Either way, your warranty is worth nothing in Spain or anywhere outside the US. If you bought it in Spain, you could've taken into the store and they would've repaired ;)

To me, this is pressure damage. You've damaged the matrix in your backpack.

Send it to the US and get someone to open a repair with sony, most likely they will charge you a flat fee to do a lcd repair ~400-500$.

p.s. the idea to contact newegg is no good. newegg do not care about Sony once they sell it to you. They wont even take it back or cancel the order once you place it :) Not a great place to buy Sony from.
