I have my old notebook Hard Drive that I would like to get some data from. It works fine but Sony did some service on my computer and they put a new Hard Drive in and sent me my old one back. I don't really want to have to go through the pain of putting it back in the notebook and backing it up to an external Hard Drive then putting the new Hard Drive back in.

Is there some sort of external device I can get that plugs into my USB or somewhere and read the drive? Thanks for the help.

Be careful to match the enclosure to the type of your hard drive: IDE or SATA.

The one linked above by Tony is SATA. Here's an IDE case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182143

Most of the enclosure do not require external power (i.e. powered through the USB port) so they are really convenient - you might want to verify this on the enclosure before buying.

Finally, check to make sure your drive is a normal notebook hard drive (2.5"). This will be true for most notebooks except ultraportables.
