I turned on my beloved S54B this morning only to find what seems to be either a dead or stuck pixel. At first I thought it was just dirty, but after trying to clean it I realized I was wrong. When I first got this machine I was very happy because I used Dead Pixel Buddy and couldn't find any bad pixels. But now, I have one. Is it possible for a pixel to "die" later? I always thought that dead pixels were something that happened during manufacturing, and not after the machine was produced.
The pixel is in the bottom right section of the screen, about two inches above the Windows taskbar. It's just high enough to be in almost every window I have open. It doesn't really seem to be completely black, it's more of a grayish color. When I ran Dead Pixel Buddy again it shows up in every test except for the black one. I've read that dead pixels are usually black and that stuck pixels are usually red, green, yellow or some other color. Since this one is a grayish color I'm not really sure if it is a dead one or a stuck one.
Any ideas? Why would this just appear after the screen was working perfectly for the past 4 months? Can it be fixed? Does anybody else out there with S machines have dead/stuck pixels? Were you able to fix it? I tried massaging the screen and using a flashing color video to fix it, but it didn't work. This made me think that maybe it's a dead pixel, but since it's not completely black I'm not sure.

Could try the PSP dead pixel fixer.

Unfortunately, stuck pixels can pop up anytime, even after manufacturing, a day, week, year after you power on your new notebook, who knows.

Well this is really annoying. Another stuck/dead pixel has appeared, just to the top left of the one that came up this morning! It's not as bright as the other one, but it's there and now I'm worried that it's going to get brighter. I can deal with just one, but now there are two and I'm worried that they are just going to multiply! I didn't buy the extended warranty either, and it is "perfect" timing that this happens...4 months after I bought it, one month beyond the Sony warranty here in Japan. I tried some of the solutions on the net, such as the PSP clip and others, but nothing has worked. I've rubbed it, let the video play for two hours, but it's still there...and now there are two of them...

ahhh I'm sorry... my screen came perfect on my Inspiron 500m but about a year later there was these huge green blobs in the middle of the screen.
Although they don't show up on most backgrounds, they're very prevalent when I'm on a black screen. The best solution would probably just wait or possibly consider a screen replacement. -
Well wish for more then, because if you have more then 4-5 you can get a new screen or even laptop because of Warranty.

He's on his fourth month of a three month warranty so no such luck.
So it's a three month parts in labor warranty in Japan? Not a thee month labor twelve months parts? Sony and other companies like that second one for many small electronics products in the US -
Japan usually has much stricter warranty and return/replacement policies than in the U.S

Sony Japan's warranty system is really bad. It's only 3 months parts/labor, that's it. Unless you shell out 30,000 Yen (about $250) for the 12 month parts/labor warranty. The two and three year ones cost even more. I didn't buy it because I thought things like dead pixels only happened during manufacturing, and if I saw one I could return it within the three months. Oh well.
Warranties here in Japan seem to be pretty bad. I have a friend here who bought a 10" NEC LaVie notebook (kinda like the TX, but I don't think it's sold in the US) and she had about 7 or 8 dead pixels. On a small screen like that, it was noticeable. NEC kept telling her that it was normal and that there was no replacement policy for dead pixels, no matter how many there were! It took two months of complaining and going to different stores of the same chain where she bought it before she finally was able to exchange it. And the only reason was because the guy at one of the stores felt sorry for her and exchanged it for a different one (with luckily no dead pixels). NEC didn't care at all about it.
Anyway, I only have these two now, and I hope they don't get any bigger or more noticeable. -
