    Hi,

It got dropped from broken hook on a bathroom stall in an airport and sort of crushed the top corner of the laptop. The net effect is that it would overheat and shut down immediately whenever the laptop would heat up. I opened it up and did a little bending and moving around of the case and it seemed to fix it up nicely, but upon putting the case back together after the third time, the connector to the keyboard/top of the case was damaged beyond repair and now I cannot boot it.

    So these are my questions:

    1. Can I buy a used laptop of the same model and swap in my hard drive?
    2. Should I send it back to Sony for repair?
    3. if I do send it back to Sony, will my data still be on the drive?
    4. How long does Sony take to repair laptops in general? Has anyone had experience?
    5. Can anyone suggest someone besides Sony to repair it?

    Here is my answers:
    1. Yes, but it will cost you a lot.
    2. Mostly they will replace any damaged parts and you will end up to pay more than its current value.
    3. Sometime they don't touch to hard drive. Sometime they do.
    4. It depends on parts availability. It could be 2 weeks to 1 month.
    5. If you are in the US, I may fix it for you.

So how easy is it to swap the hard drive from one machine to the other?

Oh well. I pulled the trigger on a used VPCZ1290X with an i7 620, 256G and 1080p screen. I'll just pull the cover off and swap the keyboard/lid and backup my drive, then use the new one.

z1's use proprietary 1.8" SSDs, AFAIK you would need some sort of proprietary connector to connect it to a desktop/notebook.

Z1 uses either microsata or ZIF type.
