Hi. I've downloaded a number of updated device drivers for my new FW490, from the Vaio update site. I've noticed, however, that these may not be the most recent drivers. For example, Sony shows the most recent Realtec audio driver as 6.01.5759, but when I checked on another driver site, it listed a newer driver : 6.0.1. 58. Should I stick with vaio downloads only?

In general, you probably don't need to worry about minor driver updates unless it fixes something specific that you're having a problem with. It may even be prudent to follow the "if it ain't broke" addage. Major driver revisions are a better bet since you'll more likely get performance or stability improvements.
That said, it sort of varies according to which device you're looking at. You most likely can update audio drivers with OEM/non-"Sony" drivers without a problem, though you might not notice any changes. But display drivers often offer substantial improvements even with minor revisions, but are not necessarily compatible with specific laptop configurations. And on that note, Sony is rather hit-or-miss with how it keeps up with driver updates.
Whatever you do, just take advantage of System Restore at the very least. -
