I understand this forum is not for bashing companies or whatever, I just want to clear the air on this and ask for peoples opnions.

I absolutely love my Sony Vaio FW but the quality of the hinges and power "barrels" has left me paranoid and concerned. Everything else about the Vaio FW is pretty much perfect, the keyboard, how cool the machine runs for hours at a time, the screen, the quality of the machine in general is good.. but why did sony produce such weak and fragile hinges and why did they place them in such a vunerable spot?

Please tell me what you think, do you think I could have got something better?

Well. I have just found out about this problem. I, myself haven't had the problem occur. However, The Vaio F series has replaced the FW series, which seems will have no hinge problems.

If you're still within the return policy, why not return it & order the new Vaio F notebook instead if the hinges & power "barrels" are bothering you so much? Good luck. :)

All designs are compromises and ultimately, they seem to have realized that the hinges were not designed for longevity and changed it in the replacement models (F-series) that are a quantum leap over the FW series in several ways.

If you are bothered by the hinges and if you are within the return period, then I would send it back and go with the newer F-series.

I'm wondering if it was really necessary to make so many posts and new threads based on one tiny issue and I bet you're going to have a sleepless night over this issue as well.

You need to realize that people generally have worse problems with their laptops and life in general but going back on topic, if it bothers you so much and you're still under the exchange period, take it back and get one of those new ugly Fs, no hinge problems whatsoever (though there are no in-depth reviews of the model yet and it is unknown what problems that model may have).

If it's not under the exchange period, you're just gonna have to deal with it for the rest of your life (ooor throw a perfectly good laptop in the garbage and go buy another one) and no, poking the barrel every 5 minutes or so won't help or fix the problem either. I'm quite curious to see how people treated the FW where the barrel fell off.

There have also been plenty of impressions and detailed reviews on the FW so far, especially countless posts on the barrel issue so you should have known what you got yourself in to.

And oh, asking in the Sony place if it was a mistake to buy a Vaio, not a good idea. Yeah, all of this may sound harsh but it's the truth, no sugarcoating.

The FW hinges have been strenghtend in the newer models. The FW 1-3 series have weak hinges and are replaced if broken within the warranty period.

What's replaced? The laptop, or the hinge? Would be nice if they replaced my series 1 FW completely (with a shiny new F!)

It's too soon to ask that question. Ask yourself that question in 3 or more years? I've had my S since the beginning of 2006 and it's still running strong. It's showing normal physical wear and tear, but no catastrophic electrical or mechanical failures. I still tote it around everywhere for work and play. The longevity of my S has convinced me to buy the new Z. I'm sure I'll get at least another 3 or more years out of the Z.

You don't have to wait for "them" to replace it right ? You can do that yourself. ;)
