Sorry if this may seem a stupid question. What is the difference between the A170 en A190 series? On Sony sites the A190 isn't even mentioned. The only thing I found was a vague specsheet which said one of them was for the Audio user and the other one for Video user.

While I'm at it, can somebody state how many DIMM banks the sony has. Since I want to up it to 1GB is it possible I just put in one 512MB module, or do I have to exchange the 2x256MB with 2x512.
    Thanks in advance!

You can customize the A170, the A190 is the 'standard' with A/V adapter. They are basically the same.

The A series has two DIMM banks. I got as little memory as possible, and bought 2x512MB at crucial.com ($112 each now) which is cheaper than getting 1x512MB from Sony. The maximum amount supported by the computer is 2GB.

Hey axelhi, or anyone in the know.

How did you get that keyboard off to add ram? I went to sony's site and it said to remove 2 screws on the back and gently pull back the keyboard to get to the other dimm slot.
My keyboard is on there real good and I am afraid to pull any harder due to maybe breaking the keys. I have 512 installed on the bottom dimm slot and want to add another 512 to my A190.
Any tips on how to get to the other dimm slot?
    thanks

    offpiste,

It's not too hard, I'm sure you can add the memory. First, put something between screen and keyboard, such as the piece of foam it came with since you don't want to scratch the screen. Remove the battery and AC cable before you start. Then just remove the two screws closest to the lid for the other memory bank. Remove the keyboard gently by lifting the front side after using a small screw driver to push back the 3 little hinges in front of the left 'ctrl' key, the space bar, and the 'arrow down' key. You will hear some popping sounds. Be careful not to break the keyboard cable when you lift the keyboard. Then lift the plastic cover put in the memory, and put the keyboard back and apply gentle pressure on the front side until you hear 3 popping sounds. Don't forget the two screws, and restart the computer.

    Good luck!
