the diffrence from 480 to 580 is that the 580 has a good graphics card, and aparently sony tried to cut down on some of the heat issues. The 480's on the clearence site should be good if you dont need the better graphics, and dont worry about a few more degrees of heat the 480's should be good. i think sony only likes to put the real high priced s series to be showen on there s series page. they figure they will make a lot more money if you think the best price for the laptop is 1700 compared to the $1300 on the clearance site.

The S5 series has a new cooling system which will has an improved heat dissemination and lower noise levels. Furthermore there have been smaller changes to the body (sleeker metallic touchbad buttons for example).
Graphics Card is up from a Geforce 6200 to a Geforce 6400 which should run about as fast as an ATI X600.

Other than that I agree with raiderlax, just depends on your needs, you can save quite a large sum going for the S480. If you want the most recent, more refined notebook with higher gaming capability go for the S580

Thanks for the help Bomfunk and raiderlax27. It was very useful. Can u also tell me whether Sony uses a 4200 rpm or a 54oo rpm HDD with its s490 model coz its not mentioned in their clearence site. It will really help me make my decision .
    thanks
