My new Sony Vaio came with Vista; Windows 7 comes free in October so might as well get used to Windows 7 now right?
So I burn a Windows 7 RC boot-up disk, give it a trial run and it works. Click to install and everything. I then wipe my HDD with KillDisk then find that Windows 7 freezes at a certain point when loading files. Won't install. Now no OS. The dreaded "Missing Operating System" comes up. Figures
I don't have other access to another DVD burner on a family member's computer so I can't download windows 7 again. Trying to format Windows 7 .iso on a flash drive on an XP computer is more trouble than it is worth to not have it guaranteed that Windows 7 will install.
I have tried to burn other free OS installers JUST to have something and nothing will install or boot. I am burning them correct because these OS are recognized, just doesn't complete installation. Tried Linux Mint (blank screen), DSL (no knoppix), and some Windows 98 clones. I don't know whether I have hardware compatibility issues or I have a faultly hard drive/optic drive.
My goal is to at least have an internet browser, then I can download windows 7 again and other applications needed to install it.This week has been too frustrating to bear.
Any help? Is there other OS's I can try or some kind of emergency OS? I don't want to purchase XP or wait until October, and I don't want to return my Sony but I will consider it.
MUCH appreciated.

Did you burn your recovery discs?
Else try pressing F10 when it boots. Altho since you said you ran killdisk, that may be gone.
If you can't get either working and need something to gain access try Puppy Linux - boots only into ram and allows you internet access.
