Hey guys,
I am wondering if you have ever got small bits of dirt underneath the flucent sheild and infront of the xbright screen on your vaios before?
I cant tell if the black dots on my vaio are dirt or dead pixels, it doesnt look like dead pixels and unless its my imagination, i think they change position everyday (prob can be my imagination)
So I am wondering if it is possible to take off the front screen to clean the dirt off and put it back together again, my vaio is a S5 series and is out of warrenty.
its kinda hard to take a picture and show you want I mean... since the bits of dirt are kinda small but easily noticable
cheers

Can you see it when the LCD is off?
-
No I cannot since it is like dark bits of dirt, some are black, some are like a light brown? but they are not exactly sqaure, they seem rounded.
-
Google a program thats displays dead pixels.
-
ok i just did what Sponsi told me, and well since there is no program that tells you "yeah you got a dead pixel" from what i can see, its not really dead pixels, since its way to big to be a single pixel.
So i am guessing its dirt under the screen, does anyone have any ida how to get the dirt out? -
It cannot actually tell you, but it will show you. Try this: http://www.astris.com/dpl/index.htm

If you decide that it is dirt, this site has good instructions for disassembling the LCD:
http://www.screentekinc.com/lcd-removal-instructions.shtml
We did this on an SZ, which has very small Phillips screws. We used an eyeglass screwdriver, but it would be better to get small screwdrivers (Sears has them).
Please post how you solve this problem! -
Im doubtful that there is dirt inside an LCD. Go download a program that will check for dead pixels. you can do a google search. that should help u evaluate your LCD

I had the EXACT same problem with my S5XP model after using it for about 8 months I notcied that specs of dust managed to get inside the lcd on the bottom right hand side of the screen... Then 1 month later a greenfly managed to get inside the lcd to the top left hand side which I was really pissed about.
Took it back to where I bought it (John Lewis) and they agreed that there was dust inside the lcd and they thought it was a manufacturing fault they offered me last week £600 and they keep the laptop or they will send it off to sony and John Lewis will replace the LCD free of charge.
Chose the refund and put £299 towards another laptop and bought the C2Z.
Must commend John Lewis on their excellent Customer Services! -
A little late on the topic but hopefully it will help someone in the future...
Stop the guessing people. I have proved a way to check this because I've done this myself just now. Long story short, I had a spot in the LCD and I freaked cuz I thought it was a dead pixel... but I found that if I look at it from all around the angles, it moves from the picture displayed on the screen so I know it's not a dead pixel... Best way to do this is in MS Paint, have a white background. Draw a dot where the "dead pixel" is, then look at it from all different angles... if the spot splits in 2, you have dirt. If it stays, you have a dead pixel. If it's somewhere you can't reach with paint, like the sides, then just use the mouse cursor or whatever... use your imagination.
Mine was dirt. I had to take the LCD apart and it was stuck behind the glass. I tried to blow it out with compressed air but it was stuck like dried booger. I then just carefully scraped it off with my finger nail. I suggest you use a thin piece of paper if you're doing it. Anyway, that is my 2 cents. Hope it helps someone...profchaos likes this. -
just a little update on this, i concluded that it is dirt, how? i got a powerpoint presentation and just marked the locations of the dirt, then i would carry the laptop about (from home to work etc) and after awhile i opened up the powerpoint to see if they are int eh same locaton, and well they moved about alot so its dirt, i will open up the LCD next week, i had already tried before but i didnt have the link CompTech providied, i will use that next week

i had a piece of hair stuck in my LCD actually, and all i did was tap the side of the screen, and it migrates to the edge and out...
it was weird. -
Well, I have searched the entire Internet and it seems that not many people get dirt under their LCDs. Well, I am one of the few. I have done every test that can be done for dead pixels, and you can easily see anyway that the spots are dirt. Now, with that out of the way, I pulled the screws out that held the rim around the LCD, then I pulled out the screen a little and could not find a way to get underneath the shiny covering to get to the dirt. I am not sure how the dirt even got in there!!! Anyway, I tried using compressed air from all angles and no movement. I am at a stand still and am looking for any words of wisdom on how I might access this dirt and remove it.

I know for a fact I have one. I forget I have my laptop in docking station and attached to external monitor. That one doesn't have dead pixels.
Pretty cool utility.
