I have multiple USB external HD's and an external monitor attached to my S-series docking station. Is it OK to simply disconnect with the laptop running, or do I need to do an explicit USB disconnect first? The manual doesn't say anything.

To be safe you need to explicitly disconnect. Undocking is the same as unplugging the USB devices.

The other option is to set the properties for those external drives to Set for Fast Removal. This will disable write caching on those disks so you can unplug/undock them as soon as it is not being written to.
