I know this was answered, but a forum search provided no help.

On boot up, the display flashes on and off before showing the windows screen in Vista. This was explained as a problem with the system checking for an external monitor.

Advice was given as to how to turn off this option.

I can't find the thread and the help.

    Please re-post it.

    Thank you

OK, I found the answer in Windows Tweaks

The following tweaks will help you in achieving a better speed at startup and shutdown of you computer, general performance as well as showing you how to display Vista's secret boot screen.

    1. Disable TMM (TY and Rep NinjaNoodles)

This tweak is responsible cutting system start time 3-5 seconds and eliminating that blank screen flash when you start Vista. This normally occcurs when Vista searches for external monitors on startup of Vista. If you are not using an external monitor, or dont switch back and forth always...turn TMM off.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

    1. Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.
    2. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."

If you use an external monitor occasionally as I do, just press and hold FN and press F8 twice to switch monitors

That fix does indeed work, but there is one minor side effect to it. The side effect is no more than an annoyance to some folks, but to others who routinely use multiple displays it can be a bit of a pain. Here is a link to the details:

    Gary,

I submitted the issue to Microsoft, and it appears that SP1 will address it. We'll just have to wait and find out.

    It's not in SP1 RC1.

Well then, maybe it won't. All I know is that they said the external monitor detection would be improved. Maybe they ignored my request entirely.

But since when has Microsoft cared about its customers? :p
