    Hi All,

Every minute or so, I'll hear what sounds somewhat like the loud tick of a clock coming more or less from the left side of my laptop. I can't tell if it's fan or hd related, but it's extremely annoying. It's definitely internal, and it's not coming out of the speakers (system volume is set to zero to eliminate feedback possibility). If I had to identify the sound source, it would seem to be coming from somewhere between the Tab and F8 keys. Weird, I know, but that's the best I can describe it.

Has anyone else noticed this? If so, do you know what the source is and how to remedy it?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jim

    Hello,

Sorry to reply to this a bit late, but I think I'm experiencing a similar problem with my CW. It sounds like the random ticking of a clock somewhere on the left side of the computer. It's not extremely loud and it seems to happen intermittently, but it's loud enough to hear, and it's kind of driving me insane.

Did you have any luck figuring out what was making the sound?

    Thanks a lot!

Theres nothing really in the area of the Tab and F8 keys apart from the fan, but the fan wouldn't make a "tick" sound anyway, even it is had broke. if it had broke or shattered somehow it would make more of a grinding noise i think.

It's likely the HDD that makes the "tick" sound, i've heard it myself ;) The HDD is located under the left palm rest. It's nothing to worry about if it is the HDD, it's just powering down to save energy when not in use. I dont think you can remedy it, apart from preventing it from powering down i suppose.

I have a WD in my CW and it clicks now and again, as does my external WD HDD :p

you should only be worried if it's "ticking" like every second, and if it is then your HDD is no doubt failing

A bit unrelated but when my blu-ray drive begins to spin a CD, it makes a loud "tock" sound, first time i've ever heard a cd drive do that. i think it's just the lens moving to position though :p

    Thanks for the responses, everyone.

I had a hunch that it was the HDD. It does seem to happen when I haven't been doing much with the computer (just browsing the internet, etc), so it makes sense that it's happening when the HDD is idle. I just don't understand why it would make the sound so frequently. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a while, but sometimes it happens several times a minute. I feel better that it's probably not a "problem," but the sound is still driving me nuts.

My HDD is listed as a Fujitsu MJA2500BH G1, if that makes any difference.

I'm going to check out that quiethdd program to see if it might help.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.
