I have a sz460 with Vista Business and noticed it had SQL server installed and running. What the heck is that for? Would anything stop working if I removed it?

If you have to ask, you probably don't need it - an SQL server is a database server, the data for a forum like this could be hosted on an SQL server for example.

The main use for having it on your machine is if you were doing application development or running a live webserver on it hosting forums or similar.

(before I just get shot down, this is a very brief overview - SQL servers are obviously a lot more complex with far more varied use)

If you need to ask what it is, you probably don't need it - an SQL server is a database system used for a large variety of purposes but generally not needed unless you're doing application development or any sort of web/application serving on your machine.

I uninstalled SQL Server from my SZ440 a long time ago and had no problem at all.

You have to kill a couple process trough the task manager to succeed uninstalling SQL server as you already noticed. Find the correct Process ID of running process that are conflicting, and kill them, then you will be able to uninstall.

Thanks - cause it's hogging quite a few resources for no reason in the background. ;)

dont think so. :) of course if you're a basic PC user, you won't need SQL and it's totally garbage. It's installed there by default in case you wanna work with software development with database access in mind favoring ASP.Net Framework 3.0 though it perfectly fits 1.1 and 2.0 framework. i'm using it actually. everyday. it favors me a lot. :D

SQL is not installed by default in Windows - 100% incorrect.

LOL. are you sure??? we are talking about SZ here. An SZ with Vista. Do you somehow notice the logic why they have to "remove SQL" in the first place... because it's already installed there when you buy SZ preinstalled with Vista Business and I don't know about yours. :)

    To recap the first post:

All SZs with Vista Business comes with SQL Server 2005. It's "pre-installed" there. Now if you will talk about normal Windows installation, you have to manually install a free Express SQL edition or buy the SQL Server itself.

P.S. Read first before you post.

Doesn't come with Vista Ultimate or Business. Some of the Vaio things apparently use it which is why a form of SQL Server is installed, but there's nothing in the OS that requires MSDE/SQL CE/SQL Express (whatever name they are calling it this minute). The .NET Framework (1.x or 2.x) does not require SQL Server. Even if you are doing develeopment, you don't need to use SQL as your backend.

Many software programs - such as some of the Vaio things apparently - can embed MSDE/SQL CE/SQL Express and install it. Happens all the time.

I do SQL Server for a living, so I know what the heck I'm talking about. Either
    a) some software installs SQL Server
    or
    b) you install it manually

Vista Business does not come with SQL Server in the box unless someone puts it there.

And I did read the post. You are the one who needs a clue.

FenderP, I dont wanna argue with this but I think you are already missing the point. The fact is, you pop it up that Windows does not include SQL Server. It's true on Normal Windows installation. following that, it is included with VAIO SZ with Vista Business. The whole point is it's there by "default" with SZ Vista Business. And THAT is the whole topic and idea. Of course no documentation states that Windows for consumers include SQL Server and Microsoft would be out of their mind if they do that.

Regarding .Net 1.0 / 2.0, of course it is not mandatory to have SQL Server as the backend storage medium. You can use any type of DB system through ADO.Net to do that. Only that, repeat, ONLY that Microsoft favors their MSQL to use with .Net in order to give favor to Sqlxxxx access model rather than the ODBC or OLEDB interfaces for use with other backend databases.

And FenderP, I'm not missing any point here. Just a thought. And my job, well, I am a drug lord.

    @SirRobin:

FenderP is correct on the part that Windows by any means (the original installer) does not really include a SQL Server of any sort. Anyhow, our VAIO SZ preinstalled with Vista comes with SQL Server 2005 Version 9.0.2047 Express Edition. This i suspect that the VAIO Entertainment platform use SQL as it's data storage information server. I took a screenshot of these and I'm able to use its services as with regular SQL Server application. Add and attach databases and peform operations on them using C# as the front-end access instruction/program. The Server is automatically named to VEDB with computer name as a prefix name to it as shown in the picture below.

As with other questions, yes they can permanently remove this service if they dont wanna use VAIO entertainment software that came with SZ Vista.

The VAIO Media Entertainment platform (part of what they say bloatware from our VAIO laptops) is a set of software for of course entertainment. Music, Pictures, Movies and Videos etc... in a VAIO connected network preferably at home. This is somewhat like a Microsoft Media Center. This setup has a server (a VAIO pc too containing media to be served) that can host VAIO connected computers with all the media needed inside that network.

I suggest you explore more of them using your vaio. ;) By the way Im using much of the software that sony provided with my laptop specially the VAIO Content Exporter/Importer for audio and video operations.

    ciao! :D

I can't uninstall mine. When I click on un-istall it comes up with a message saying "this application has known incompatibility issues"... The last time I ignored the warning with my virus scanner, it messed up my system big time and i had to reformat my Vista.

How can I un-install it? Thanks.
