So I was trying to do a semi-clean install like here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=146033
but during the bloody recovery process there was an error partway through and it didn't finish, completely messing up drive, and now it won't boot up and the Recovery won't work anymore :(

    Here's what I have:

    1) A Vaio Z witout an OS

    2) A backup DVD I made with the Vaio software when I took it out of the box

    3) An older Dell Visa disk I never used

    4) A Vista upgrade disk

Basically, I have no stand-alone Vista DVD :(
    Am I screwed?

a Dell Vista disk is just an OEM disk. You can use that and just enter the key on the COA label on your Vaio when prompted.

Yay :) This is looking up...

The COA label is the sticker on the bottom with "Windows Vista..." written on it?

That's the one. It's going to have a key that looks like random letters, numbers, and dashes. Vista will ask you for this during installation, just type it in and you'll be set.

Alrighty, I got Vista Installed :)

Now about getting the devices, Fn keys, Stamina/Speed switch, S1, S2 keys to work....
Has anyone had any luck with that? I can't seem to get my Z completely up and running :(

Just tried to use my recovery disk, and got the error again: Error 305: 64 ?

Well, here we go again with installing Vista...
I don't think I'll try to recover it to factory conditions any more :(

Go to Sony's website and download the drivers for your specific laptop. Forget the CDs.

I've got all the devices except the nVidia 9300m GS working... and the graphics switching, and the Fn buttons.

Any advice? I can't seem to figure out how...

For some reason, after installing the Vaio Control Center, and Power Manager, it looks nothing like it used to when I got the laptop... fewer options too :( (including no good way to mess with the S1 and S2 buttons)
    Any idea why?
