I read somewhere that at some point during the upgrade process you are asked to place your original XP disc in. Is this true?

If so, with Sony's this is a problem as the more recent notebooks don’t have XP or recovery discs. Instead you have to burn your own disc from the recovery partition on the hard drive.

Has anyone done this upgrade already with a new Sony notebook to shed any light on what you have to do during the upgrade process?

PS I'm assuming I can’t do a clean install with Vista Premium Upgrade? :(

maybe thats why bill gates axed the old method. for those who dont have xp cd's but have it on a recovery disk. maybe sony would come up with a solution. cause i dont think u can delete the hidden recovery partition even with a vista cd

32bit is the way to go for now.
most drivers and softwares are not supported on 64bit platform.
    atleast not yet.
and dont worry any retail vista dvd comes with both versions on the same disk.
also your laptop is already 64bit ready
we just have to wait on the rest of the world to catch on. i mean software and drivers manufacturers

I'm afarid I'm one of those poor dudes who got their Vista Ready laptop a couple of months before October 2006 so no free upgrade for me.

Surefire, I'll be interested to see what the process was of upgrading and if a clean install was possible. Let us know.
