I don't get it - if I remove the LAN setting utility and VAIO Wireless Setup Utility - wouldn't I like get rid of that taskbar thing and disable the wireless switch on the laptop?

SmartWi allows you to toggle bluetooth or wireless lan functionality by pressing the fn+f1 hotkey, so it basically does the same job as the WSU without a tray icon appearing. SmartWi doesn't even have to appear when using the hotkey so I suggest you use that rather than the WSU on XP.

Click the wrench icon on the top right and use the following settings:

What the hell does that mean man?

That's the only thing I've got - so I don't want to uninstall it cause I don't want to mess up my wireless.

    ghost buster reference.

    J2SE Runtime Environment is java, i wouldn't un-install it.
MS.Net framework, the is a microsoft product and i dont know what it is used for, but it seems a lot of their programs need it.

    1. i believe this is the java program. you'll need this if you run java programs like azureus.

    2. some programs need net framework to work. one that come to mind is norton ghost (needs net framework 2.0)

i've deleted 1 without having any problems since i don't use any java programs and turn off java on firefox.

however, i've noticed that some of the programs i use requre 2. i'd keep 2. as a matter of fact 've upgraded to 3.0 from microsoft

Yeah I think the opening processes out of the box for the SZ for me was 72 processes using 467mb of RAM.

    Ouchie :-(

But I reduced that by reading some stuff I found here & google. Now I have 32 processes at startup running 213MB or so.

But my question is why Sony install these two proframs on Vaio SZ? What applications originally installed on SZ require those two programs inorder to run properly???

    1) J2SE Runtime Environment....
    2) MS.Net framework

Well I originally started off with 70~ processes as well with about 780Mb of RAM! But I narrowed it down to 56 / 650MB RAM at the moment. Still quite high though - don't know how you guys managed to get it so low! :(

Well I don't really find the utility useful but how else can I turn ON/OFF the Bluetooth module, cause that's how I do it at the moment with the utility? I don't the Bluetooth to be ON every time I switch my Wi-Fi on.

it just makes your life easier. no other sony programs in the sz requires java. i know because i deleted mine. however, you may encounter websites that run on java for instance some isp speed checkers, online games, or java chat. so to make your life easier sony bundles this with other things like flash player. about net framework.... i'm not sure if net framework is required for any sony programs. i just know that some progarms i have (non sony ones) use it.
