    Hi All... :)

Here's the link to the model, FE35GP, which I'm interested:
    http://www.sony.com.my/sonystyle/product/productinfo_vaio.asp?Subcategoryid=173

I would like to upgrade the RAM as this model has only 512MB RAM, I'm not sure if this model can support RAM with 667MHz.

" Processor System Bus 667 MHz

    Memory Bus 533 MHz "

Is the processor system bus as known as the FSB?

And what does the memory bus mean? the speed of the RAM?

    Thanks...

I would personally avoid any potential troubles (if you are seriously worried) and get 533MHz RAM. The higher latencies of 667MHz RAM offset the increase in speed...553 and 667 perform about the same.

That 533MHz might just reference the speed of the included RAM though. A 667 FSB *should* work with 667 RAM without a problem.

    Thanks Night :D

I think I would better buy another 512MB RAM with 533MHz, just like u said, avoid any potential problem ;)

I think the bios would even clock it down to 533, so 667 would be pointless. Sony was supposed to get a bios out that would support 667 but doubt they ever did.

Oh... :( Because in my country FE38GP gonna costs RM1000(around 280USD) more than FE35GP, which the differences are:
    1)2.0GHz / 1.83GHz

    2)4MB L2 Cache / 2MB L2 Cache

    3)1GB DDR2 SDRAM / 512MB DDR2 SDRAM

    4)120GB SATA HDD / 100GB SATA HDD

I don't think I'll see the differences in 1), 2) and my budget is a bit tight :D

    And there's another question... :p

Which manufacturer should I go for? Is Kingston a good brand for RAM?

U already got one or planning to get one?

1GB RAM form Sony's Malaysia cost you RM$1103, which is about US$296, 512MB cost you RM$633 (US$170). Since your notebook is still under warranty, ask them if adding RAM yourself will void the warranty or not?

Yes, Kingston is a good brand for RAM, if your budget is tight, so for KingMax.

    Hi... FiReWoLf :)

Actually I'm planning to buy a notebook :p

As Sony’s RAM upgrades are too expensive I'm considering to do it myself.

Thanks for reminding me the question regarding the warranty ;)

Just stick with 533, it would be cheaper, but 677 is also supported, but it wont be any faster

    Not true.
667MHz is actually notably faster than 533MHz when running heavy apps. And no, the 667MHz ram will NOT run at 667MHz, becuz the bios is not capable of running the ram at 667mhz, so the 667 ram downclocks and runs at 533mhz, as rhcpcrony mentioned earlier. U can put a 667 ram in the laptop, but it'll only run at 533.

Maybe there will be a bios that supports 667 ram to run at that speed, but by then, a new series will probably replace the FE. who knows.

So my suggestion is, unless u're really desperate for the extra ram speed and 100% sure that there's a bios that allows ram to run at 667mhz, save your money and stick w/ the 533 it supports.
