I'm not gonna lie.
my laptop (SZ160) has frozen about 30 times in 2 months.
How's that possible?
I didn't really do anything but it just freezes radomly.
I don't know what to do.
-
Depends upon a lot of things...
What have you installed since you got the machine ?
Is it getting too hot ?
Are you doing anything in particular each time it freezes ? -
My sz120 froze 30 times on the first day. That was only because I installed Norton Antivirus. I did a system recovery and tossed norton out the window. Now all is fine.
-
I am having the same problem. Everything stops responding. They keyboard, trackpad, the screen does not change image. Even switching the wireless switch to off doesn't change the two wireless lights.
I have tried doing a clean install from the recovery CDs and it has still frozen on me. The frequency is probably once every other day with no sort of pattern and sometimes happens twice a day.
Does nobody else have this issue? Any ideas on how to fix? I have all of the latest drivers and bios already installed. This is ridiculous. Faulty motherboard? -
Running fine here... Have you run a diag on your system mem?

Have you tried consulting your Events Viewer? It may show errors that cause the system freeze-ups you are having.
To get to it, go through Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. -
I have the same issue on my brand new SZ1HP (UK spec). It freezes, the mouse cursor continues to move for about 5 seconds then that freezes too and the whole machine is locked. Pressing the keyboard or a mouse button seems to make it lock faster once the mouse is moved. When I say freeze, I mean, the cursor continues to move but when hovering over items in XP, they don't change colour. I heard at another forum (Micropctalk) that with the UX series it might be the Shock-G sensor. It has frozen about 15 times in 2 weeks now. This is the best computer I have had by far and the best looking but this is appalling.
Also I get a mild electric shock sometimes whilst the machine is plugged in across the aluminium palmrest, anyone else get that? -
The shock thing is well documented and the known fix (as much of a PITA as it is) is to replace the default two prong AC adapter with a grounded three prong one. God knows why Sony has not fixed this issue yet. And while we're on the topic of mouse freezing, has anyone else had their right mouse button stop working? I'm seriously thinking of dumping my SZ for a MacBook at this point.....
-
I am aware of the issue. I had a Dell D600 which had the same issue when I took it to Thailand where they only have 2-pin mains sockets so it became ungrounded. More to the point where am I supposed to get a 'three prong one' from and why the hell should I?
Is it fair that I spend £1200 on a top-of-the-range designer laptop (that's my interpretation of what I bought, please take it or leave it) which requires me to buy a new power supply and send it back in because Sony's R&D department is so inept they can't design a laptop which doesn't lock up due to what is purely a manufacturing fault it would seem and also not ground the metal palmrest. Despicable business practice... -
Anti-virus incompatibility is a huge issue.
I got hit with 26 blue screens of death before I realized ZoneAlarm was the culrpit.
Did you recently install RAM/have RAM installed? Yet another issue.
Honestly, why are these problems limited to VAIO's?
Doesn't that say something about them? -
I know what the problem is - or at least I think I do. It's this 'Shock-G hard disk protection' Sony have. There are no blue screens, it is purely freezing, Windows doesn't even know it has happened - no 'a serious error has occurred' dialog.
I am waiting on a replacement stick of 1Gb DDR2 to arrive but anyway, I always Memtest86 when installing or getting a new stick or machine so I know it's not the RAM causing any problems.
Yes, it does appear to be limited to VAIOs, specifically the SZ and UX series because they are using the shock sensors. All it shows is a lack of proper testing on Sony's behalf. It's sheer laziness and I start to hate them more everyday and kick myself for buying a Sony yet again. -
Yep, most expensive mistake I've ever made in my young life.
But I'm stuck with it, so I suppose I'll gradually convince myself to like it.
I've had some success so far, but the deep regret still lingers. -
It seems you're having the same problem as the people in this thread. You should contact Sony about it.
Does anyone have same problem I have? (sz160 freezes frequently)
