How come none of SONY's 15.4" laptop screens are high res like 1440x900 or 1680x1050? If they had a model with one, i would seriously consider getting it. Does any one know of any plans to release a model with a high res screen?

Because IMHO it's the ideal resolution for screen of that size. I love my FZ 15.4" at1280x800. Previously, I have to squint with my 13.3" at 1280x800. Now it's much better. PC manufacturers like to promote higher and higher resolutions. Alienware even have 1900x1200 at 15.4". Little do people know that the more resolution you pack in, the smaller the font and the harder your video card has to work to keep playable frame rate. Sure, you can increase the DPI but that's sort of defeat the purpose of having higher resolution. I would say 1280 is good for 15.4" and Sony should not change it or at least should keep it as an option.

I don't think they should get rid of 1280x800 resolution but have higher resolutions as an option, on the FZ at least especially when paired with a Blu-Ray drive.

I agree. I love the resolution. I am not a graphic designer and do basic tasks with my computer so it works out just fine.

Dell now has 1900x1200 on their 15.4 as well. Small text but nice for blu-rays!

Nobody would want watch a blue ray movie in a small 15.4" screen IMO.

May be they don't get that much profit by selling FZ/ blue ray drive notebooks.

    Disagree.

I had for a week a Sony TZ and watching a movie in this fantastic widescreen screen blow me off. :)
I would love to see blue ray movies in this 11.1'' screen with the 1366x768 resolution. By the way, I know I am off topic but do you guys think is it possible for Sony to fit the blue-ray drive in the next generation TZ?

I'd expect to see it maybe on a next-gen SZ type series before we see it on an 11.1" machine, just for the fact that you'd need a graphics card from ATI or NVIDIA to actually handle the video, DRM rights from the disks.

I too wish Sony had higher res screen available on their 15.4" screens. It would certainly make sense with their BX series for business to have higher end ones with a good graphics card for those users who do heavy graphics and CAD/CAM work on a notebook, and need the extra resolution.

I had heard that the Montevina chipsets and their integrated graphics would be able to handle HD Video which we should see in all of Sony's notebooks by the end of this year. Though the ultraportables would use a weaker chipset, not sure if that would be up to the ask.

Yes, if Sony wishes to gain more market share, they need to offer more options for their notebooks, like better discrete graphics and higher screen resolutions, they already have many good things going for them, but still have things to improve on.

I don't think SONY should get rid of the resolution they have for a 15.4" but it would be nice to see a 1440x900 or 1680x1050 res screens. If SONy had this, I would seriously consider getting one. At least for me, this was the main reason I scratched them off my list.

I remember old BX models had higher resolutions..why did they sack it? probably they did not sell well.

actually the lack of higher resolution is a bad thing for some "semi pro" usage. For example...my old asus M6 have 1680x1050 and it kicks ass! I can have word documents, web pages and even some excel opened at the same time. I can get sooo many stuff into the desktop and some hardcore working is really easy.

But for gaming or movie playback, 1280x800 is fairly enough for 15.4

I wasn't sure if I would like the 1280x800, but so far on my FZ I love the resolution. My old hp was 1680x1050 and I would take the fz's screen over it easy.

yea, im sure there is no doubt about the quality of x-black screens compare to anything.

but i am missing working space in 1280x800, perhaps I should try to lover the DPI thou?
