The Cingular card that come pre-installed in Sony SZ's is for EDGE/GPRS data transmission. 3G uses the same network but through different hardware at much higher speeds (Bursts over 1 mbps, average 500-700 kbps). I really cannot think of a good reason for Sony not to have put in the Broadband Connect card (3G HSDPA) except of course expense. You can buy a 3G card from Cingular to insert into your Sony which will make it HSDPA capable.

I'm using the Cingular GT Max PCMCIA card which is the 3G network and speeds pretty much the same as EV-DO.

I tried SPrint's Rev A but I was having issues. The Cingular card just works.

Apparently, the SZ370P/C uses a daughter card for the built-in EDGE based on another member's recollection of FCC filings. I'm hoping someone will post a walk-through soon to replace the built-in daughter card with an HSDPA daughter card from Novatel or Sierra Wireless or any other company that makes daughter cards for HSDPA. That will free up the slot and you won't have a bazillion things to connect/disconnect before/after using your laptop. Otherwise, my laptop wouldn't fit in my laptop bag.

It looks like we're at the mercy of Sony Ericsson and whenever they feel like putting out an HSDPA module for laptops, which they haven't, as of yet.

Wrong. It's a completely different protocol - in fact in many countries it's a different frequency as well.

Except it's faster in most cases and has a better upload - on smaller footprint, though.

Cingular's speed in awesome here. Sprint could be faster but that's in very few spots nationwide, VZ is neck-to-neck with HSDPA but rather slower and has an awful TOS.

Hmmm...Interesting...that is pretty much what I said. Same network with different hardware allowing you to achieve greater speeds with a capable phone. The beauty of the network is that unlike others, it is totally backwards compatable. Anyway, thanks for making everything clearer.
