I need SPDIF output from my laptop. The Realtek chip inside, ALC889S, is capable of SPDIF, but I'm not sure whether Sony enabled this feature. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Anyone? I'll feel really stupid if I buy an external sound card for this and then find that it was there all along.

Sorry, I have no idea. I couldn't see anything in the service manual. You may have to test it to find out.

Look into its service manual, cc has it on his Web page. Or try it out there are several possibilities.
I have Vgn-z which has an spdif connection internally feeding the hdmi but vpcz is different.

You could probably use the hdmi with an external converter, or it might have a combined line out / spdif out 3.5 mm

Never mind. Bought an Asus Xonar U7 external sound card. Wired SPDIF, optical SPDIF, plus headphone and line out jacks.
