I had a Dell for 3 years; after maybe 1+ years, the surface of the touchpad started wearing down in the areas where I use them most (the center, and the scrolling area). It's like the protective surface is getting all gunky and peeling away, so now it's not even smooth anymore but has a granular feel to it, though the pad still works perfectly fine. I think sometimes my fingernail accidentally scrapes over the surface, too, so it's sorta like you have this perfect crystal and then an imperfection leads to increasing degradation, etc.

So I am wondering with the sony laptops, do you guys have the same problem, or not? If so, how do I prevent this from happening. Or is this just natural wearing down? I would have replaced the touchpad on the Dell, just have to buy a new palmrest, but doing so requires extensive dismateling, including the display, so I just lived with it. But the touchbad looks ugly and feels rough.

    which model was it?

i dont know what exactly the layer that peels of is. but some notebooks seem to have it and some dont. but touchpad wear is pretty much universal. either u get this layer coming off (on some notebooks) or an area where you put ur finger on most often gets a bit shiny.....

I have the 600m; still using it, too. I guess I didn't keep it clean, and kept using it and it rubbed down? I can stand shiny, but this is rough on the fingertips :p

My Dell Inspiron 4150 is of 2002 vintage. The touch pad has been a bit shiny for a long time, but no damage. I purchased the TZ in August, and after 2 weeks, the touch pad scroll area becomes shiny (Since returned due to heat). Now I have the TT, and the touch pad seems to be holding up, no shiny area yet. :p
