Well, i have an FE with Intel Centrino core 2 duo T7300, 2Gb of ram, 200 gb HDD and GeForce Go 7600; Wireless LAN (802.11a\b\g) and Bluetooth Technology, 15.4" WXGA TFT with XBRITE-HiColor Technology and MOTION EYE White Camera

The problems were with the modem & sound, and also with the key-functions. the video driver also didn't worked properly.
The wireless it was working, but the network .. also not working. the camera, not working.
The drivers for motherboard & processor, i've taken them from intel.com.
The model i have, sony is saying that is not compatible with XP.

PS:i've tried to instal drivers from an older version (VGN-FE790), but they sayd it can't be installed, cause is a diffrent machine. (but those drivers are .exe, if i could open them ... i think it would be ok, i mean something like unpack the .exe files)

    Waiting for helppp.

I'm not sure about the function keys, but all other problems should be fixable. A lot of solutions seems to have gathered in this tread, i suggest you try those first and if that doesn't help you you can always report back here.

    Hello,

    I've succesfully installed Xp.

    The drivers are working fine.

The only problem that i have, is with the control buttons, they aren't working: the S1 & S1 buttons, not working; the volume & mute buttons are working. Also the FN+ buttons are not working. And for example i can't find another way to change the brightness.

    Plase help :D

I managed to downgrade my VAIO VGN-FE890 from Vista to XP SP2. Everything is working fine, but S1, S2 buttons and the modem. Since I don't care for those functions, I haven't tried to fixed them.

    What I did was:
    1. Download drives from sony site for the VGN-FE790. I know, if you try to install them it will complaint about the wrong model. See step 2.
    2. Do double ckick to the exe file of the driver you are trying to install (WAIT), then look for the file model.txt in c:\windows. Edit this file and replace Model = "VGN-FE890E" with Model = "VGN-FE790" then save the file.
    3. Return to the installation window and continue the installation of the driver.

These are the drivers I downloaded, I don't remember if I installed all of them, I guess you have to try:

    ALDOTH-00199338-US.EXE
    INDETH-01042400-US.EXE
    INDOTH-01035101-US.EXE
    INDWLL-A1035409-US.EXE
    NVDVID-01193603-US.EXE
    SOASSL-00598801-US.EXE
    SODCAM-00457801-US.EXE
    SODOTH-00445800-US.EXE
    SOOOTH-00778702-US.EXE
    SOOOTH-36900000-US.EXE
    STDAUD-01098107-US.EXE

    Hope it helps. Buena Suerte.

Change brightness manually under advanced display properties panel. Thants what I do in my FZ21, since FN for XP also don't work, cause software from Sony is missing.

Smurf, not sure what your idea of "tried" is, but those links provide everything you need to switch to XP. It's not like you click on a button and XP installs for you though, it's a painstaking, manual process where you install everything driver by driver and utility by utility. You need to start with a clean, licensed XP install though, and you really should preserve your initial Vista installation. Personally I just took the free upgrade to the 100GB HD when I bought the laptop, and then bought a 200GB 7200 RPM drive from Drive Solutions for less than what Sony was charging just to upgrade to a 5400RPM 200GB drive when you buy the laptop (so I got 2 drives, both of them 7200RPM for less than the cost of 1 5400RPM drive). That enabled me to preserve my original Vista installation, which you may need if your laptop ever requires warranty service and there's even a remote possibility that it could be software related (I know, I'm going through it right now with Sony).

By the way, for any of you that can't get the brightness thing working... I switched from Vista to XP when I bought my FE890 in April, using the FE3 drivers that are on the Sony UK FTP site, and the "S Button" controls worked just fine including the brightness control. I see that the drivers have been updated since then, and apparently some of the FE4 drivers also work for certain features such as the Webcam which I COULDN'T get working in April/May. Technically the drivers said it was working properly, but when I'd try to use it it just wouldn't work, and everybody else reported the same thing. I also couldn't get the Bluetooth working when I installed the XP drivers, but those were the only 2 things, everything else worked 100% as expected just as if the Vaio shipped with XP.

:), so, let me settle some things here.
1.it's not the first time when i make a downgrate on a laptop, just that with mine i had the most problems.
2.finally i managed to install XP perfectly, i mean everything is working ... just i have some problems, like, when i want to put it to sleep or hibernate, i get a blue screen... if somebody could help me with this...
3.and now i thought of installing win XP 64b , cause i thought it will work.

PS: of course i still have vista, cause i have license on it..so ... don't worry about that ;)

    Hi

I just bought Sony Vaio VGN-FE890, and even I'm in the same situation but would rather say, I've just installed XP. It seems you have done lot of research on this, can you please share all the .exe (s) / drivers with me.

It would be great help for me.

    Thanks
    Pawan

    Hi

    Further to my last reply.
I've created a webfolder (kinda ftp) where you can upload the exe / drivers for me.

Here is the link (No password required) :

    http://www.4shared.com/dir/4976812/a110dd41/Sony_Vaio.html

    Thanks

The "UnknownDevices" program was the key to finding the correct vendor, and then driver, for the internal ethernet controller.

Once I had that, I was able to quickly move on updating XP and getting the other drivers.
