I wonder if someone knows where can i get drivers for this laptop, i need to install Windows XP Professional.
-
Hi
I downgraded my Sony Vaio VGNFZ240E from Vista to XP. I need help with various drivers like camera, audio device etc., How do I get it? Please help me.
Sammy -
Hey, did you already install Windows XP to the Sony NR110E? Because I'm having trouble installing it to the SATA hard drive, and currently I have no operating system, and I also erased the recovery partition.
-
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNFZ240E&LOC=3
They are the original so it may not work properly with your FZ. -
Has anyone got Windows XP installed onto the Vaio Laptop? I need help finding and using the drivers for when XP installs.
-
Hey, even i am having the same problem with VGN_NR110E .I have Windows Vista preinstalled on it.
I am unable to load WindowsXp on my vaio, It says "hard drive" not found.
When i called Sony support, they say that there is no DOWNGRADE option for this laptop. WTF????????????
Please help me out
Thanks -
Yea, apparently Windows XP does not support installation to SATA hard drives, and you have to load them from a floppy drive.
You're going to have to use Vista, or if you're like me, and formatted the laptop, you can use Ubuntu 7.10, but you have to install the wireless card manually.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512828
Afterwards, you can use VirtualBox or Wine to install or run WindowsXP. -
I am very poor at Linux commands, so i am not i ll be able to get everything working or not..............
anyways Thanks for the info....
Please let me know if u have any alternate way to install XP on sony vaio
thanks -
Hey,
I'm having the exact same problem with the vgn-nr110e trying to downgrade from vista to xp. So there is no floppy disk, but does any know if we can use a flash drive to load the SATA drivers? And where do we get that SATA driver, i went to the sony site and the only one close to it is motherboard driver. Does that inlcude the SATA?
-Kent -
Nope, I tried using a USB flash drive, and it does not work. The drivers for the VAIO chipset is located here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2800&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21
It is number 8 on the list.
However I have not yet tested it out if it works.
Again, you must use a floppy.
Sorry if its not much help...I'm currently using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy, and its pretty nice. You could try it out if you wish. I highly recommend it.
Also check out CloneZilla if you wish to backup your current hard disk. -
hi guys, windows xp isn't impossible. I've got my copy right now with everything running besides the HD audio modem. For the SATA problem, you don't need a floppy disk either. I'll post back everything and host the driver files in a bit.
-
That would be great if you could place the driver files in a .zip file or something and upload it. The main thing I'm worried about not working is the wireless network card. If you got this running then a how-to and files would be greatly appreciated as Vista = Bleh with the X3100. -
awesome news, after poking around on the internet and reading other forums about downgrading sony's, I came across a page on sony asia's site that was specifically for downgrading XP. They didn't have any of the NR series, interestingly enough though, they had VGN-N series labeled. I took a look at it, and it seems to me that the hardware driver set is identical with the exception of the audio driver. I will do a test install with this and let you guys know in a few hours.
As for the SATA booting goes, there are 2 nearly identical files contained on intel matrix storage manager's driver set. The one you want to get is ICH8M Sata AHCI driver for mobile. There was a lot of confusion on this for me, but the right one is the AHCI driver.
Here are all the files that the matrix storage manager throws on the floppy:
http://mobius9.com/INTEL_MATRIX_FLOPPY.zip
you will need these files to get SATA running.
Now, I did not use my floppy drive for installation. I made my own custom install of XP. It was fairly easy.
First, download NLite. This is a program that makes custom XP installations. It gives you the option to make your install unattended, add drivers, windows themes, or remove unwanted elements of the install. Its a great program, here's my little writeup on it.
Install Nlite
Insert your XP Disk into the cd drive
Run Nlite, it will ask you where your xp installation is. Chose the drive the XP disk is in, and it should recognise it.
Next, it will ask you where you would like to save your installation. I'd suggest making a folder on your desktop, or somewhere easy to remember.
Next, Task Selection Screen should come up. Make sure you check Drivers, and Bootable ISO. I also like to check Unattended, so I have less work to do during the installation
Next, you have the chance to insert the SATA Driver. Click Insert > Single Driver. From the Intel Matrix Install Floppy, chose iaahci.inf, it will open up a screen of the contraining drivers. Select the HEM/HBM SATA AHCI controller (mobile) NOT WORKSTATION/DESKTOP.
Next, you have the options to change the default values of the XP install, you can pre-insert your serial number so you never have to type it in at installation, add desktop themes (MCE, Vista style, etc)... you can toy around with some of the settings that you're familiar with at this point.
Next, it will build your install of windows. Click yes if it asks : do you want to start the process
Next, the final step. You have the option to either burn your install to a disk or write it as an image file. I usually chose direct burn, as it goes straight to CD.
I'll keep you all cued in on the installation files, and I will host them all if it works. -
I've successfully gotten everything up and running with the exception of the wireless card, could you perhaps let me know what driver(s) you needed to get up and running on an xp install?
-
this worked for me:
http://mobius9.com/Wifi.zip
belsthar, do you have the screen brightness keys and everything working? -
Unfortunately, no, I'm working a step at a time, till i can get everything down. Currently, however, I have got the chipset, and video up and running
-
the new set of drivers are a bust. even though they are the correct set, sony had model locked them so that they won't install on anything but the intended computers. Unfortunately the sony software which would control our FN keys is locked as well... if only someone had an old sony we could extract this all on!
did the wifi driver work for you? I have the yukon lan plug driver as well.
here's everything I have right now
http://mobius9.com/INTEL_MATRIX_FLOPPY.zip
http://mobius9.com/Wifi.zip
http://mobius9.com/nr110ePACK.zip (follow 1, 2, 3.1, 3.2, 4, etc)
http://mobius9.com/alpspointer.zip
this should encompass everything but the dial up modem and screen brightness control. -
I've got XP up and running on my NR110E now. I managed the graphics, Ethernet and WiFi drivers. Its all running fine.
Having trouble finding the audio, modem and card reader/writer drivers. I had taken a screenshot of the Device properties of these components before I got rid of Vista.
Here are details
Audio
Name - Realtek High Definition Audio
Date - 12-06-2007
Version - 6.0.1.5433
Modem
Name - HDAUDIO Soft V92 Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Date - 12-02-2007
Version - 7.62.0.50
Card Reader/Writer
Name - Texas Instruments PCIxx 12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller
Date - 23-04-2007
Version - 2.0.0.18
Now these drivers are for Vista, so we need older versions. Not that these won't work. They just might.....but older versions should definitely work with XP.
Can someone help me get these please..... -
ok, I've got the Texas Instruments Card Reader/Writer working now.
Audio and Modem is what I need. Can someone guide me, or I'll have to switch back to Vista just because of these components. -
-
I'm a little confused as to how I go about installing the 3 audio 1 files that are placed in the folder. Does it read the .ini files in the main folder? Or is there a certain sub-folder I have to run the .exe's from? -
-
Lemonade, get the card reader drivers from the Vista installation.
I had no clue Sony engineers would be such big blokes. Go to "C:\Windows\drivers\exe". Pick up all the drivers from there. Not all of them would work for XP, but card readers would definitely work. Only thing I am missing is the Memory Stick Icon in Explorer. That I can live without.
The other thing that does not work are function keys. The volume thing works though.
I will be posting the complete thing shortly for other users shortly. -
ok, This to install XP on VAIO VGN-NR110E
What I have - A working Windows XP set up on my machine with all devices working
What I don't - Function key controls (volume controls work without the volume level display), Icon for Memory stick in Explorer.
How to set up.......
First of all collect all the drivers you will need from the following links. Also back up all folders under c:\windows\drivers\exe of your Vista Installation. You will need these. I hope you have your Vista installation still there. I never removed mine. Its kind of as good as buried somewhere in the hard drive for me.
SATA Hard Drive

Audio
~~~~~
1) Install the patch kb888111 first. Get a download link for this file from
http://geekswithblogs.net/lorint/archive/2006/06/11/81540.aspx
2) Install the Realtek Driver now. Get this from
http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=3&model=W3V
This also includes the patch that supersedes 888111 but don't bother about it. Just run setup.
P.S. - Make sure the 888111 patch goes in first. You may have to fiddle around with these 2 things to get it working. But it does work. If done the right way, it'll work fine.
Ethernet
One of these 2 will work
OR
You'll have to try. I forgot which one was it.
WiFi
Driver Name in the list ----> LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11g PCI-E Adapter Driver (4)
Card Reader/Writer
These drivers are available in the folder ' Memory Card Reader Writer Driver (TI) Registry Patch V_A - 0.0.1.1' under C:\Windows\Drivers\exe (Vista Installation)
Modem
Most likely this would be detected on its own as soon as your audio is installed. If it prompts for drivers show
it the modem drivers you backed up from C:\Windows\Drivers\EXE. The modem drivers are under the folder ' Modem Driver (Conexant) 7_73_7 - 7.62.00.50-logo'
Graphics
Run the exe once you have done installing the other drivers.
Installation of Windows XP
--------------------------
First, you'll need the SATA hard drive drivers for XP to even detect your hard drive.
You will need an external USB floppy drive to supply these drivers. If you don't have one go to this link.
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml
Once you have installed XP go on installing the device drivers. Just remember, you'll have to set up the audio before you can set up the modem.
Finally, I slipstreamed all these drivers (except Graphics) into my XP installation CD except for Graphics. If you plan to do that make sure you don't add the Graphics drivers. That'll totally mess up your XP installation. Leave those for a manual install later. -
Ok I got XP up and running, but I have to say I'm still pretty disappointed. My main reason for downgrading was for better playability with the X3100 but my performance is equal to what I had on Vista. Is there any bios updates/downgrades needed to get games running on XP like they're supposed to.
-
I got XP working very well on my VGN-NR160E/S. I formatted Vista the minute I got this laptop (about two weeks ago).
1. Slip-streamed SATA drives using nLite into XP Pro
2. Installed all the chipset, WiFi, NIC, video drivers from manufacture source
3. Audio installed with XP auto update
Haven't done the MS and SD reader yet or the modem, but those are not critical.
Has anyone had luck with backlight control? I still get 2.5 hours without it, but I would love to get more. -
You guys collectively are such a big help. I'm also a NR110E owner, and thanks to this, I have made my laptop actually usable. I didn't even think about looking in the OEM installation for drivers, can someone upload the modem drivers?
PS Can anyone get the Wireless LAN light to show up? I know it's not important, but the more things that work, the better it is. -
do you guys think that sony will release a downgrade disk or something for windows XP for this laptop?
-
Thanks mobius9, the packages were really helpful. Although, I kinda miss Ubuntu
As for the downgrade disk, I doubt they will, I was on chat support for hours, and all they could say was "Sorry, Windows XP does not support your hardware".
Also, anybody get the Fn keys to work? ie Brightness?
(btw, anybody find the BIOS to be really sparse?) -
I'm so close to having my NR11S/S working they way I want it with XP, mainly due to the information I found on this thread. I'm still trying to get the screen brightness control working. If I find anything I'l post back here.
-
same here
any info on the brightness controls will be greatly appreciated! -
so you guys cant control the screen's brightness at all in anyway??
is there a way just to reformat it to vista without the unnecessary programs preinstalled? -
Can you help me, please? I have XP on it already, but no drivers. Thank you. -
Maybe somebody have VGN-NR160E Drivers for XP?
Please help. -
Besides the CPU type, stock RAM and stock HD, the VGN-NR160E and the VGN-NR110E are the exact same laptops. Just follow the rest of the instructions here for drivers, they will all work.
-
-
i hope that theres a solution to make sony nr110e/s works fully functional with xp, if it doesnt ill reformat back to vista premium if possible
i hope you guys can make this happen!! -
-
I finally got xp installing on my NR110E. Here is how to do it. First you'll need the SATA driver file. Here is a link to it from Intel http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
It's the 3rd one that refers to putting them on a floppy drive. I did not have a working floppy drive so I downloaded winimage. First extract the file with winzip. Then extract that file with winimage. You will now see the iaahci.inf file.
Now you will need to download and install nlite and follow the directions in the previous post to burn the new win xp install disk. When you add the driver point to the iaahci.inf file. I hope the drivers are easier to install then this bs process. -
just to verify, so you guys can not control the brightness while youre in xp right?
-
I can't control the brightness. But then again, I can't even get my screen full size. What's up with the graphics driver? I've got pretty much everything else installed. Can anyone tell me how they got the graphics drivers working? Wow. I just did it. You have to use the file that says it's for developers. Anyways, I would not recommend this computer for someone who wants to regress to XP. I spent a whole day and a half working on this. The memory card readers and the modem you can get from the previous drivers you hopefully backed up from Vista. Others will install automatically from Windows Update and/or from the OS itself. The LAN and Wireless are a bit more challenging. The links in this blog where there are 2 LAN drivers one did work. The wireless is tricky. Good luck with that. Audio worked by installing the kb888…file first and then the realtech file. (References made to the previous 4 pages of this blog) The information was very helpful. I must have had to read it 10 times but I finally have a NR110E working well with XP.
-
Ok, so I found a solution to the On-Screen display for the volume controls. Seems like theres something to do with a HKServ.exe that needs to run in order for the OSD to show up. Still haven't gotten the brightness to work though.
Link is below:
Install Sony Utils first, then HotKey, the restart.
can anyone in this thread post screenies of their XP on VAIO nr110e/s?
-
Im looking at doing this to my NR110E what do i do about the Sony Applications do i just install them like i would on vista or do i need to sorce them from somewhere
-
dont no if this helps but i found this for Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection from intel download site: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2259&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21
or here to select your version of Windows http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2259&lang=eng
Would anyone on this thread by willing to put together a CD of all the files and instructions needed to downgrade the VGN-NRxx to XP?
I'd pay for this!
Thanks
