Hello. I have a Sony Vaio TZ150N. I accidentally dropped it and the right hinge cracked (the side where the power button is).

When I close the notebook, the lid does not naturally go down all the way. The right hinge area is still popped up, so I manually press down on it to fully close the notebook.

Also, the notebook loses connection to the AC charger if I close the notebook. Like, when I put my notebook into Standby mode or shut down completely, the notebook battery ceases to charge once I close the lid EVEN though it's plugged into an AC outlet charger! The notebook only recognizes the AC charger when I keep the notebook open with the screen up.

I'm guessing the power management issues have to do with the fact that I dropped the notebook and the right hinge cracked. Everything else about the notebook is working perfectly. It just doesn't charge while closed.

What should I do? I want to have this issue fixed. Does Sony fix out-of-warranty notebooks? What is the price for this kind of problem, usually? Should I go to a local PC repair shop to get it fixed instead?

First and foremost I offer condolences on your accident. It happened to me this week as well but I was lucky enough to have an ADH warranty still in effect. It really feels awful when you are responsible for hurting your own rig ;)

As for fixing it, you can send it to Sony for out of warranty service, but I would expect them to charge you a pretty penny for it. Anywhere from $300 up. You should call Sony tech support, describe the situation and ask for an estimate, also ask if there is a charge for them to look at it and give you an estimate. Then if it's too high you're only out the shipping cost, both ways, probably around $50.

If you can find a good local shop that has demonstrable experience working with the TZ it may be your best bet. Also, it may be that given the age of the machine you may be best off using it as is and just leaving the screen up for charging it.

Others have more experience so await better specific advice. There are photos and videos covering many different types of repairs. you may want to google it and see if they have one on it.

    Good luck.

A few things you can do yourself to try to fix the damage ...

    1. How to disassemble Sony Vaio TZ laptop and remove hard drive >> Inside my laptop
It takes about 20min to get the keyboard off...however it doesn't show how to get the right side apart(power button).

    2. http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/208981-my-tz-story-dissecting-tz.html
You can have an idea how to get to the right side

    3. Sony VAIO VGN-TZ150 Laptop/Notebook (0027242717312) | eBay
This is a beat up TZ but it looks like the parts you may need to fix yours are ok...$70.00..better than sending to SONY...

    Good luck..
