    Hi there,

Haven't posted in a while, ever since I got my shiny new (now not so new) FW. My boyfriend is currently configuring an E series laptop. He is trying to decide between these two hard drives ($50 difference). I remember when I was configuring my laptop the difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm was negligible. I don't know if the E Series is the same or not. Sony has it listed as:

    500GB Hard Disk Drive (5400rpm) [add $50.00]
    500GB Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm) [add $100.00]

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

    -Rachel

It depends on what you're going to use it for. For large file reads and writes, i.e. raw transfer speed, it's usually negligible.
For random access, it makes a lot of difference, because the head spins into the correct position that much quicker.

Or, to put it another way: If the drive light is steady most of the time, it won't matter much. If it flickers a lot, it will.
