I know this is an old topic - but hoping that somone may have a workaround...

At homeI use my new E series laptop as a desktop with external monitor and keyboard - hence want to operate with the lid closed.

A broadband spped test shows the wireless thruput drops from 8Mb to 256Kb when I close the lid. This despirte showing a 56Mb Good Connection to the base station, which is line of sight 15 meters away!..

It is not the orientation as with lid open but horizontal seems to work OK.

All Power options are set to max...

    Cheers

Ok I have experimented and as far as I can see this is a hardware/software configuration problem.

With the lid held open just 1cm by a pencil eraser I get full speed communications irregardless of where the router is located within the house.

With lid closed , ie backlight off, I can sit the wireless router on top of the lid and the speed drops down to 3% of the partial or full open speed.

It begins to look like, a pencil eraser, and setting the laptop secreen brightness to 0 (power options), is one workaround...

Someone in Sony must know what is going on here..

ps found a utility to switch off the backlight (well almost, 5% is the minimum) I am using the console App and a pair of batch files

I'm having the exact same problem with my EB series Vaio. I assume nobody has found a solution for this one yet, have they?

As for the eraser solution, if you're using an external monitor, you should be able to turn off the screen of your notebook via a Fn key combo, with my Vaio it's Fn+F7 to toggle between display modes (ie Laptop screen-Monitor /Projector only-Extended desktop-duplicate screens)

It probably has got something to do with power profiles. Maybe in your current profile, with the lid closed, windows cuts the power output of the wifi card, which results in the lower speed. These settings can be changed in the advanced power options.

btw, setting the router on top of the laptop is a bad idea. You're not necessarily going to get any better signal reception with that position.
