sorry if this has been said before.

i have a S170 with an extended battery and im able to get 9+ hours while on firefox, aim, notebook hardware control, MS word, AVG virus protection on, and wifi.. i dont know what anyone else is getting, but i used to get arond 6:30-7 hours before doing this.

first, google "Notebook Hardware Control" download it and install it. (its free)
then go to cpu voltage and set the lowest multiplier (mine was 6) and set it around .2 lower. Now do the same thing for the the rest, but you only need the the lowest multiplier for the battery life. setting the rest of the multipliers lower will lower the temp a lot! mine went from high 60s C to high 50s C while on full load.

next, if you have an ATI gpu, go to the "graphic" tap and go down to "ati clock control" and set the clock mhx at thier lowest. *you can also over clock it* theres two setting you can put it , so you can have one for battery and have one overclocked for games.

then go to the sony power controls that came with the laptop and set to ultimate battery.

i dont know the kind of results you'll get, but it game me 2+ hours. pretty crazy. of course, before when undervolting your cpu and gpu. set it too low and it will become unstable. setting the multiplier .2 vlots lower has given me good results. i dont know about going higher. for the gpu, ive have it set at 47mhz/47mhz and everything is fine.

    good luck

You can also do it with Nvidia Graphics cards, The latest atitool also lets you change nvidia clocks, though NHC can set it to 100/110mhz on battery, 200/200 on medium and 450/350 on power settings. Ill give the undervolting a try, but on a multiplyer of 6 0.95v is the lowest it can go so I dont see how I could set it at 0.75v.

maybe because you have a core duo? my 1.8 pentium m can go as low as 0.7v. as long as you can bring it down, temperature will go down and battery will go up. have you checked if you are getting more battery life?

also, i think yorue looking at powerplay, instead of ati clock control which lets you set if lower than that.

No as I mentioned AtiTool Will let you set whatever clocks you want both on Nvidia and on ATi cards but NHC comes with Powermizer as part of it which can do the aforementioned settings. 0.95 is as low as it goes on a core duo sadly, My cpu usage rarly goes over the x6 mulitplyer so it would be unlikly it would save me any power.

well i dont think i have any reason to lie, but you have your opinion. And because theres no way to acutally prove that i get 9 + hours on my extended battery with all the things i said, theres nothing i can say to change your mind.

i was just trying to help others with similar laptops to raise their battery times and lower their temps.

maybe you should try undervolting your cpu and underclocking your gpu to see what kind of battery life you get before you call ppl lairs

Does anyone have any idea why when I turn on the clock modulation under the "CPU speed" tab my CPU load starts to shoot way up intermittently? I can get it down to about 62.5% (on battery) before the load starts to go up to 30-40% as it's sitting idle. The multiplier stays at 6x (lowest) and the voltage at .95 (also lowest).

On the newest release ( beta ) It really slowed the performance of a Vaio TX, even while pluged into AC power. I didn't even change anything in the software!
I didn't bother to get the non beta - my Vaio runs fine as is..

    Actually there is...
Assuming your extended battery is 85 Whr (correct me if i am wrong)
so a runtime of 9 hours would mean a battery load of 85/9= ~9.5W :O

Just post a screenshot of the NHC battery tab where it shows the battery drain and if it is any lower than 10W, bingo!

I installed the .net 2.0 and the notebook hardware control. It might not be applicable for my vaio, because i cannot set any voltages at all. They are empty and cannot be modified.

I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-FR215S notebook. anything known about this one?
Maybe you have also got a solution for my fan noise problem, it keeps making a loud noise, until it is shutdown. I cannoit regulate anything at all, f.e. bios, tools etc.

    thanx in advance.
