I have had this happen a few times with my 3 month old Vaio VGN-FS850, using XP Home. It's nasty, since the only way back in, is to boot up with F8, and then selecting "last known good configuration".

I finally did some research on the "error message" that showed up and was led this morning to here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837115

Without getting technical, it appears that some processes won't release themsleves upon closing Windows, and this sets the stage for the error to occur next time you try to log in.

Microsoft obviously figured it's a problem, and included it, along with a software fix---which I promptly downloaded and have been "error-free" so far.

If this problem has been giving you a headache--then I hope this solution will free you of it.

    Sincerely,
    Stan
