Did anyone purchase the extended warranty directly from Sony? From what I'm reading, it seems like it may be a good idea. I'm thinking of purchasing the FW.

I've done it on the Japanese models I've bought and Sony Japan has fixed my issues with various laptops with no questions or problems. If it's the same as that program (albeit for the US or wherever you are from), it isn't a bad idea if you ever have to exercise it. Cheaper than buying a new laptop.

I just got 3 years warranty 'free' from Sony UK (in quotes because I paid a big premium to buy in Europe anyway!)... and they knocked off another 5% if I signed up to their worldwide insurance (loss, accident, theft, etc). So in the end I got the insurance for something like £20 per year - seemed like a good deal.
I would never recommend paying extra for a desktop PC warranty as they are less prone to breaking (if they work initially) and they are easier to repair yourself... but laptops it's worth it IMHO just because the screens are so expensive on their own. In my experience, if you need to replace a laptop screen it's often more expensive than a new laptop of equivalent spec, so the warranty comes in useful. ;)

don't purchase directly from sony...it's more expensive. i bought a 3yr with accidental from provantage for ~$200. and, it's an actual sony warranty, serviced through servicenet (or whoever sony uses). i had a problem registering the warranty on sony's site and sony CS is the one that handled the issue.

I got the Service warranty with ADH for 2 years from SonyStyle when I bought 2 accessories for $8.88 USD each, and the service plan came down to $108. With the campus offer right now, it discounted the notebook another $200 so essentially I got the service plan and 2 accessories for free AND some discount left over.

what is the difference between the 2 year warranty with adh and the 3 year express shipping. If i use the college promo it is about a 23.21 dollar difference. That is if i get the neoprene case and a headset.

is worth an extra 23.21 for the 2year adh?

What is everyone's experience with Sony laptops? Are they reliable and built to last? I take extremely good care of all my electronics and since my Toshiba lasted for 5 years (and still running but only as a web-browsing desktop replacement and only had 1 year of warranty on it), I have high expectations from Sony.

Adh is accidental damage and handling. So if you drop the notebook, its covered.

The 3 year is only extending limited warranty which covers natuaral defects in the laptop.

I got the adh, I figure I'm more likely to break the laptop myself then have it kill itself. Also in 2 years, I might be ready for another laptop...LOL

My brother's vaio is a monster so far, its been dropped, xray while on at airport security, and ocassionaly used as a coaster for his drinks...still works like day 1

I believe most laptops can withstand being xrayed (certainly by the lower power units used for hand luggage)... but surviving a drop is certainly impressive! :)
