I have an R505, it doesn't have an cd-rom drive in it. I need to re-install windows and I don't have anything to install from.

I purchased an external USB enclosure for a cd-rom, and an external Firewire enclosure for a cd-rom, neither of the cd-rom drives boot. Is there some special key that I need to press to boot from USB or Firewire?

Is there any extenal drive that I can use to boot this unit?

You need to change the boot order in the bios. Every model has a different key to press to get the boot screen. Mine on my T42 is F12. Some other ones are Del or F2. Some laptops do not like installing from an external drive. You may want to check into that before you wipe the drive. Good Luck.

I've got the boot order set up to boot to the cd-rom.

But the CD-ROM is hooked up through the USB connector. You should point to that if available.
