I'm about to order a Sony F Series custom. In Canada, the upgrade from 4GB to 8 costs $130, which seems to be quite overpriced considering the general price range of aftermarket memory. The memory type is DDR3-SDRAM-1333. Is Sony's memory proprietary in any way? Can I buy a 4GB stick of ordinary DDR3-SDRAM-1333 laptop memory for the upgrade? I'm comfortable with installing it myself since I've taken apart laptops to clean and replace components in the past. Hopefully this thread can be useful to others wondering the same thing.

Of course you can upgrade yourself :) Nothing special about the RAM.

However, I can't answer your question if you can buy a 4GB stick and just put it - this obviously depends on whether your laptop has a free slot. My S came with 4GB, being 2 x 2GB. So in order to upgrade to 8GB I had to replace both sticks with 2 x 4GB.

I have no idea whether the F has 2 or 3 slots all-together and how it is configured - whether 2x2GB or 1x4GB. This is something you need to check and consider.

But generally - absolutely no problem replacing it yourself, it is RAM like every other. Just pick up the right type.

Thanks for your reply. The upgrade should be possible since the base 4GB option is listed as one stick of 4GB RAM.

Probably best to open the RAM cover and eyeball it - no idea what someone in the factory did and it would save gnashing of teeth if you'd picked up only 1 x 4GB stick. I like the peace of mind that 30 seconds with a screwdriver gives me!
