I have been trying to figure out if my F11/720qm will support virtualization, either Win7 XP mode or Virtual Box.
I believe the chip is VT-x enabled, but I am concerned about the lack of access to bios in the Vaio. Anyone have any experience with this? How have you done it?

I found the links about Sony disabling VT; anyone know if this affects Virtual Box?
-
No, Oracle VirtualBox wil not be affected -
Microsoft has fixed XP mode so it will work even if virtualization is not enabled. Your article is not up to date on this.
Have you gone into bios to see if there is a selection to turn virtualization on? -
Thanks, reb1 and rr! I couldn't shut down mid-day to check bios but just did and it is there. (Timeliness is not one of the internet's fortes.) And even if it were not, I found a path:

This too is old, so maybe I was worrying about nothing.
Thanks, again! -
Currently by default XP mode will work without virtualization turned on. I believe it will load faster and be more responsive with the virtualization turned on.

I ended up going for the $75 win 7 pro amazon instant update (cheaper than msft website) and have the whole thing running now. So far no complaints; running two copies of the same software, which would not be possible otherwise. Running with virt. turned on. (It will be interesting to see if there is a significant difference one way or the other; I saw a test where Virtual Box ran significantly faster with VT-x turned OFF.)
Added bonus of being able to run the couple of programs that refused to run on win 7. -
I upgraded my Vaio from XP Pro to 7 Pro for $119 not to long ago. Around a month ago you could have upgrade 7 home to 7 Pro for 59.99 at Newegg. It was on sale with promo software.

On msft website, it was $89, but immediate direct delivery from msft on amazon was $75. I say direct because they didn't let me use my Amazon points to pay for it. :-(
I would have preferred to buy a full XP license and use one of the 3rd party apps, but not enough to pay double for it. So far, it is very, very efficient for my needs. Very efficient, even for realtime stock market delivery data. -
There is a hardware assisted virtualisation detection tool from Microsoft which tells you if your system is capable:
Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - HAV Detection Tool
You need three files from Microsoft to run XPMode:
WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe
VirtualPC-Windows6.1-KB958559-x64.msu
Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu (not needed for Windows 7 SP1)
Download Windows XP Mode
