OK, I have my lovely FE which apart from a couple of glitches (caused by my tinkering) is great. BUT- I installed USB portable speakers this evening. Great speakers- but first firefox started playing up- refused to open! Reinstalling FF solved that. The other issue is that since installing the new speakers, the computer keeps periodically chirping/ squeaking at me. Now, the mute button is on AND windows sound schemes disabled. Where the heck is this sound coming from? Incidentally, Defrag reported i needed to run chkdsk- so I did. Could this have caused the squeaking?

Thankfully I have a temporary solution- I can remove my hearing aids :) . However, it's still annoying so if anyone has any ideas, let's hear 'em!

There is that power issue with usb devices maybe if you tried installing the patch?. Other than that if every speaker is off it might be your cd or HD. Try disabling the cd drive to see if that does anything.
