I am in the market for a new laptop and need advice. I use my computer for: digital photography, database, audio, downloading and watching Bit Torrent TV shows, and web browsing. To me some important features that I want in my new laptop are: nice clear screen with rich colors, quiet when I am listening to music or watching downloaded torrent files, a laptop that does not get hot as I do plan to use the computer on my lap while sitting on my couch, good WiFi and Bluetooth connections, and a DVI output either built in to the computer or available with an adaptor or dock. I would like to spend around $1,500 on the new laptop. Size is not that important as I will not be traveling much and plan to use the computer basically as a desktop replacement and plan to connect the laptop to a larger LCD, either the new Sony 20" HT-205 or the Dell 24" 2405.
I have always liked the Sony screens especially the X-Brite. The colors are very rich. When I have compared other laptops using some high resolution pictures, the Sony always seems to have the best picture. I do not mind the glossy screen. The Mac Book seems to be a good computer from what I have read. They are now using a glossy screen like the X-Brite, there is a built in mini DVI output, the OS X and software are good for my needs and the price is right at $1,300. Amazon is selling the Mac Book for $1,200 with no tax and free shipping. There are some serious issues with the Mac Book. There seems to be an overheating problem in quite a few of the laptops and Apple is not admiting to a design flaw. Others are noticing a whinning noise from the LCD. Some people are able to exchange their laptops or have them repaired, others are not so lucky. The Sony FE that I was interested in will probably be a BTO with the dual core processor, and seperate graphics card. Are there any issues with the Sony FE series. Is there an inexpensive way to get DVI output on the FE without having to purchase the expensive dock. Thanks

Go with FE. You already know that macbook pro you ain't gonna put it on your lap. period. I had the macbook pro and the sony sz, which is a smaller version of the FE. Its a good laptop. Right this moment, the main thing is if you really know how to use a mac and you have the programs.
Personally I found the PC easier to use. But thats me. Bittorrent is also easier to use on the pc if you ask me. Both screens are clear. and now you can even order the apple with the glossy screen (dont call it antiglare or apple people with bite your head off) if you wanted.

I beg to differ. The MacBook Pro does not have just "heat issues". Its a critically unstable system. In other words, its worthless. Sure, its appearance and reputation is appealing, but once thats all said and done, the unit quits on you after a half-hour of doing light work. The MBP definitely doesn't fit your bill for sitting on your lap, not unless you want to be rendered sterile. As for the Dell, those guys don't know the first thing about laptop LCD screens. Go with the Sony, its the safer alternative. They make great products.

Thanks for the comments. I want to clarify one thing. The Apple laptop I was considering is the Mac Book not the Mac Book Pro. The Mac Book Pro starts at $2,000 and has an aluminum case. The Mac Book is the replacement for the iBook and comes in the white or black polycarbonate case. What I would like to know is why the Apple laptops have so many problems even though they are all using the core duo chips. I had heard that ASUS might be the manufacturer of the Apple and Sony laptops. Regardless I am leaning toward the Sony FE series.
It looks nice, the price seems right, and I have never had any problems with Sony computers. You are right about the Bit Torrent files, there are more options with Windows. I have never had any problems with Windows XP. I have some further questions. How is Windows Media Center compared to XP How will the new Windows Vista compare to OSX, and last but very important how can I get an inexpensive DVI output from the Sony FE without having to spend a lot of money on the Sony dock. Thanks

in that case go sony. That macbook is weak. graphic wise, it has a very cheap gpu chip.
media center shouldnt be used unless youre gonna use it with a tuner card. not worth it. Vista looks good and that macbook IF you could run it will be slow. The vid card is prolly min specs for it.
