I tried to follow the instructions provided by Sony's website for a clean install ( Sony eSupport - Electronics - Support Information. I couldn't locate the notebook utilities, so I installed the following in this order:

    1. Sony Shared Library
    2. Vaio Control Center Settings
    3. Setting Utility Series

I rebooted the machine but it still doesn't work. I also can't get the FN + Sleep or FN + Pause or FN + Break buttons to work. The only buttons that work with the FN key is the mute, volume up and volume down.

I can't seem to locate the Notebook Utilities for the VGN-Z790DND model. It's not listed for Windows 7, so I tried the Vista 64bit Business one but the setup states it's not for my machine, so I tried setting the capability for Vista and it still doesn't work. I'm running Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.

Does anyone know how to get this to work? I can't find any more help on the forums.

EDIT: I managed to get it to work. I had to install it in the following order:

    1. SFEP (Sony firmware extension parser) driver
    2. Sony shared library
    3. Setting utility series
    4. Vaio Event service

Just install them all in one shot, reboot and the F5+F6, F12 buttons should work. This also fixed the S1 and S2 keys and it shows up in the Vaio Control Center Utilities.

When you install the first time, there is a specific order. Second time around it doesn't matter.

Actually you need drivers first, then the event service or library then the normal utilities. Drivers are needed for everything to engage the bios. Event services are needed for certain functions.

Also, pass on the Windows 7 stuff Sony has listed, it's all useless except for the camera capture utility. Which is worthless in 64 unless you manage to find the camera driver. Sony did no one any favors posting those items on the SZ series pages as they left out a ton of information and even what they did post, if it works, works only partially. All they did was make people THINK it will work.

    Lacking items include:
    Not all function keys working.
No way to enable the WWAN.
    No camera driver.
No way to disable many items for power management.
    No HD protection
    No memory stick driver
    No Nvidia drivers
Bluetooth support sucks for some models and items (some of this is a 64bit issue regarding specific devices, not an SZ issue).

    Not exactly thorough are they?

I hope you have it all working well, if not, check the guide in my signature if you are still lacking some functions. The others and I in there have the SZ line pretty well figured out.

If you have more trouble, post in that thread, more people will catch it and help out.
