My plastic latch just broke off after 9 months of use. I was wondering since this is obviously a pretty prevalent problem, are there any instructions out there on how one might replace the latch with a more durable material like metal? Or are these plastic pieces easy to buy and replace?

Crazy Glue...get the type for plastic surfaces.
Apply alot of it...don't be stingy on the application or else it will just break off again. -
I think even with crazy glue, it may break after a short time.
You may be able to find the schematic of the FS model you have and check the part number for the latch. You MAY be able to buy just the latch either from Sony or from some third party vendor. You can also call Sony customer service, and check if they can repair it for you (could be expensive).
Depending on the design, the latch can be easy to replace by just removing a few screws, or it can be really hard to replace if the sides are held by another "locking" latch (similar to Vaio V505 design), but if you can find the scheme, it may provide some hint.
Here's a starter:

I Crazy Glued mine back on after it broke off over 8 months ago...it's still holding strong.
The secret to long latch life on the FS is not to squeeze it or pick it up from the latch end. -
ah, that's good to hear. As long as there isn't much pressure applied, it should hold.
