My FS742/w has a Sony DVD RW DW-Q58A burner inside.

It keeps failing when trying to burn to Ritek G05 DVD-R media. (burning .iso files through DVD Decrypter gives me an I/O error of "Invalid Field in Partameter List").

I read somewhere that there's a known compatibility issue for Ritek G05 and sony drives. So...to test, I bought some Sony RW discs and they burned fine. Which tells me that the drive doesn't like the media. I upgraded the drive's firmware to USY2 (it came with UFS1) from this site: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2113

I couldn't find an official Sony site with firmware, so I don't know if there's anything more recent.

But, the drive still doesn't like the Riteks. Could anyone tell me which DVD-R brands they've successfully used? I'm assuming that Sony's discs are rather expensive, so I'm hoping there's some cheaper compatible brands out there...

    Thanks for any help.

Taiyo Yudens are widely considered to be the best blank DVDs. You can get them at places like Rima.com or FujiFilm blank DVDs sold at BestBuy and elsewhere marked Made in Japan are TYs.

Thanks! I assume you've used them successfully with the FS742/w burner?

I'd heard that Ritek were also supposed to be great (and they'd worked flawlessly with my Pioneer DVR-107D drive), but the sony drive hates them...

I have not burned them in that particular drive since I have an NEC burner at the moment. I burned them in every drive I have owned, at least 10. They only failed in one drive the Pansonic UJ-812 on my ThinkPad, but it would not burn any discs that were rated higher than the drive 2x. Ritek is a second tier manufacturer at best. Their qaulity is all over the place. If you stick with high quality blanks, like the TYs, you shouldn't have any problems.
