    Hi,

I have recently purchased a custom fw series from sony style. Its great, apart from the performance. I have a 2.4ghz, 320gb 5400rpm, 4gb ddr2 ram, ati 3650 model, but internet browsing seems slow compared to my sisters 2.4ghz 2gb ddr3 ram macbook unibody.

I guess this is because of all the applications on the sony. I do not do any photo/video editing stuff all I do on the laptop is internet browsing, movie watching, listen to music and do office documents.

Does anyone know what I can safely uninstall to reduce the processes number, most of the time its 98, and thereby increase the performance.
Currently windows task manager says the cpu usage is 12% and physical memory is 40%, I have no idea what that means so if someone could explain I'd be very grateful.
One final point, I have heard that new computer owners are supposed to create recovery disks? What are these and are they actually needed?

    Thanks

Slow browsing - this can be attributed to missing plugins, antivirus, etc...

Recovery disks - get into Sony eRecovery and follow the steps to create recovery disks (and yes they are important)

You can try to review and disable unneeded startup processes and services to make your sysyem more responsive.

Last but not least, Vista needs a few days to learn your browsing habits.

Just get rid of everything, reformat, and do a clean install with XP Pro. All my applications fly with XP. Everything is smooth and much faster!

This is not what the OP wanted. Vista runs as fast as XP. It's Sony's fault to include a crap load of bloatware with their nice machines.
