Could be that your tele doesnt have HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hdcp

If your tele doesnt have this you wont be able to play blu-ray films full stop :( as hdcp stops pirating smacktards (apparently) :)

EDIT: Mindyou you could try using an analgue output (vga) and the like as only the digital outputs (dvi/hdmi etc) are protected me thinks

    I GOT IT :D
now i feel kind of silly, what happened is:
i was projecting the FW display on my HDTV and it wasn't letting me playback the blue ray.
SOOO i set catalyst to detect my HDTV as my main monitor and i disabled my FW monitor. here is a screen if anyone is having the same problem

Hmm, while we're on the subject of FW, HDMI and movie watching on an HDTV, does any of you guys knows if the FW upconverts DVDs to high definition when playing a regular DVD and using the HDMI cable to a 1080p HDTV?.

    Thank you.

Ok, I just brought my FW370 home, and can't get the blu-ray to work either. I am computer stupid, so if anyone has any dummy directions it would be VERY appreciated. I did try what I could from your posts, but still couldn't get it to work. This is the reason I chose this, so I could play blu-rays on my tv. Thanks.

Use HDMI cable to connect to the TV. On my system the ATI software popped up and said it detected a new monitor and offered to mirror, extend of use only the external monitor. I selected external monitor only (my HDTV) and the system automatically used the TV as its primary display. If the ATI software doesn't come up you can manually run the ATI wizard.

    Cheers,

It will work but you will have to use the fn + f7 combination to set your display so that either the desktop is extended onto the TV or so that the LCD built into the laptop is disabled. Due to DRM restrictions put on Blu-ray titles you cannot have a movies displaying on two screens at once. The simple way to get around this is to use a program like AnyDVD HD.

Yes, it means you don't have the ATI tool, however, Blue05R1 says there is a simple key combo to accomplish the same thing.

I tried just about everything, and finally called Sony. After they dialed into my laptop and 2 hours went by, they came to the conclusion that my tv is not HDCP compatible via HDMI cables/BluRay. It did work with my smaller newer tv, but not the one I watch movies on. Although, I did try to watch it on there, and realized there isn't any volume! Does anyone know if I get a HDMI to componant cable--will that work? I am beyond frustrated with this, and would return it, if I wasn't dumb enough to get it from Circuit City.

for video, yes. you will have to find some other means to send multichannel audio to your home theatre speaker setup.

If you use anydvd hd you will be able to output to a non HDCP compatible TV.
