Anyone have any idea how to remove the lower part of the screen bezel? I removed the two screws at the top, popped it off all the way down to the hinges, now I am lost... any help?

I recently replaced my FW's screen, and I too could not remove the lower part of the bezel.

Replacing this screen was a major pain in the butt. I would not wish it upon anyone -- nor would I want to do it again myself.

How about swapping the entire frame of the screen without removing the bezel? I am thinking of swapping FW190 and FW490 screen. Is that easy to do?

I don't like FullHD or ECO screen from FW490 but loves the faster Radeon HD 4650 video card. I don't like the slower Radeon HD 3470 video card from FW190 but loves the 1600x900 HiColor screen. Swapping the screen would make a perfect FW490 for my need. If it is easy to do of course.

Maybe check the Sony screen part numbers on those screen sites (like http://www.lcds4less.com/models/sony/vaio_vgn/sony-vaio_vgn-laptop-screens.html) to see if the parts are ever with identical numbers. Note that screen packets were mentioned in one of the sites in the posts I made earlier on screens, so the idea of not removing the bezel might work.

What I fear, though, is that there is some other problem you could run into. Remember, if we can trust the brightness and contrast specs on notebookjournal.de, then the brightness of the HiColor is dramatically higher than that of the FullHD. Is it too simplistic to assume that one reason the HiColor might have been abandoned is its higher energy requirements? Not out of the question, right? If so, then the switch might not work.

You might try emailing [email protected] and asking for a Level II tech to give you a call to discuss screen issues. Once you have one on the line, you can find out more about the interchangeability. After all, you can't be worried about breaking your warranty since you could never send in the computer and have it be recognized -- so you could easily speak frankly with the tech who can check part numbers, etc. They know what these FWs look like opened up because they oversee repairs!
