    Hi everyone.
    My first thread here.

My Vaio crashes while playing 3D intensive games like, L4D, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, CoD WaW. After playing about 1~2 hours or so.
No other application causing this, so I suspect the GPU. Here are the details:

    Symptoms:
    • Screen quickly fades out to either dark grayish black, or white.
    • Some scratchy sounds on the background.
    • Barely visible waves moving upside-down on the screen (like when you cannot get a clear signal on TV).
    • 2 or 3 vertical thin noises on the screen.
    • Cannot exit to desktop, have to cold boot the PC

    Specs:
    • Sony Vaio VGN-FW93XS 16.4"
    • Core2Duo T9900 3.06 Ghz
    • ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4650 1GB (with the latest Catalyst drivers installed)
    • 4 GB Ram
    • DirectX 10
    • Vista Home Premium x64

    Other info:
    • GPU temp before gaming: 45~50, during gaming: 68~75 Celsius
    • CPU temp before gaming: 35~40, during gaming: 65~70 Celsius
    • Playing with high settings (e.g. "Gamer" in Crysis) with no performance issues whatsoever until crash.
From what I gathered, those temps are not way too high, and the PC should hold well.

    Anyone with same problems?

Have you tried the latest driver from ATI (not Sony)? Use Mobility Modder so that you can install it with your notebook.

    Thanks hendra,
I just did that. Downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers. The drivers date in my machine was 2009/5, and the date at the ATI website was 2009/8. However during the install, it said "Catalyst control center and drivers are already installed and up-to-date" ???
Installed anyway, and run the modder. Modder said the drivers are configured.

Good thing is, I played Crysis Warhead 3 hours without any problems. Also gpu temp was below 70 all the time. I have no clue if it is related to what I have done, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.
