I'm in the same boat, 'cept I wanted a nice messanger bag. I had my heart set on the Case Logic XN, but I'm not sure it will fit the FW.

You might also consider having a look at Wenger.
My mother has a Wenger backpack (I dislike them and have a Wenger Messenger Case), I believe an FW should fit into it.
http://www.wenger.ch/ -> Customer from USA (Or Staples in Europe :D)

    Here are the backpacks:

Might be an idea. (Wenger -> Genuine Swiss Army Knife)

    Bardia:
You might want to have a look at Wenger too.
Or Targus, I had an aviators case and it did a good job for 2 years, being crammed full to the brim. Weighing up to 15kg or even slightly more...

So will a 15.4in bag work or does it have to be a 17?

I think most bags are made to fit a 17" laptop, except the "manufacturer ones" (Sony, Dell...)

My Wenger Messenger Bag is for a 17" laptop, which means I can fit my SZ into it vertically and I've got space for the transformer next to it, my Bluetooth mouse, tissues and if I want, a DSLR camera as well.
Then on top of the laptop I could fit one or two books (university, UK)

It really depends what you want your bag for. At least for the SZ Sony also offered more of a "sleeve" for the laptop, about 4mm thick, well paded, using that, if you can get it for their larger laptops too, you could put it into any backpack without a problem.
    Its a preference thing.
Also I like to have space in my bags, I used an aviators case for school... so...
Some other people want their bags to be as small as possible.

There is only one rule which wil hold true for most laptops:
You bag can't be too big, you'll always find something to go next to it, may it be a mouse, a packet of tissues or the "power broick".
(Wouldn't reccomend that on the TZ and Asus Eee though, but these are way smaller than average laptops)
