Can you format the FW 500GB into two drives? a C drive for programmes and a D drive for documents etc?

Is it worth doing, or just leave as a single partition?

    TIA

Sure you can do it. The best way to do this is to download the free Easeus Partition Master program to make the partition. It's fairly straight forward, and you're computer will reboot, but it is much more effective than Vista's built in partitioning utility, which has messed up on me numerous times.

Is it worth it? Eh, you can try it and see if it suits you. I suppose it depends on the files that you want to put on there. If you're doing it to protect them from any viruses, creating a separate partition may help, but viruses can take over other partitions; this happened to me recently and I had to format my entire hard drive. If I were you I would buy an external USB flash drive because they're so cheap and it's the most secure way of protecting any documents.

I used Vista's built in tool - worked fine on my 320GB drive. Split approx 50-50 for OS and files. Concur with Sandlotje - external hard drive/USG for back-up storage. Either way recommend you back-up files etc FIRST, then partition - no matter what program - there is always a chance...
