Could FW owners please update us a week or so from now and let us know if you have this issue?

Yikes!
-
Just put a piece of cloth between the screen and the keyboard. It should be done on any laptop.

Actually, putting your own balls (so to speak) on the lid wouldn't hurt either.
-
Just wondering, before anybody makes any comments - can't we (customers) expect to get a reasonably care free product?
And speaking about these little "rubber pads" the SZ hast got 4!!! And its much smaller.
Also, some people will carry an FW around, either out of doors or just indoors, so you do expect to open and close it regularly.
Then, if you carry it around, do you want to always have a piece of cloth that you have to remove/replace when you use you lapto? Being honest, no.
And by the way - a three years old Medion laptop hasn't had any screen problems after 3 years (no cloth) and I would call it heay use. Daily use, and it got carried around a fair bit as well with pressure exerted on the lid.
So in that respect - Sony made a mistake.
JohnTitor, you might contact sony about it, maybe they'll change their desing, at leat in the next series. -
yes we should expect care free products, its not too much to ask
If this is the case with the FW I wont be getting it...I refuse to use a cloth, Ive owned various laptops since 2002 and Ive never had to use cloths and I wont start now...so Im waiting to hear what other owners experience
btw, this wasnt from my own experience (i dont own a FW), a FW owner posted it in the NBR review thread

Ok first off, if you have to buy a fiber cloth just to prevent wear and tear in the first week of use, that's BULL****. If it is needed, Sony should have provided it. In fact, that problem shouldn't be there in the first place. How much more money would it cost to add 2 more damn rubbery balls? like .005 cents per computer most likely if they buy it in massive bulk. give me a break! the SR better not have any of these type of letdowns where I have to spend MORE MONEY just to maintain something SONY SHOULD HAVE FORESEEN AND FIXED in the first place.
I say RETURN IT. Why pay 1,000+ for something already wearing down? -
I do this on every laptop I owned. MBA/TZ/SZ all come with thin screens, and especially the Sonys have a lot of flex. The Asus I'm working on now has a lot of damage on the screen.
Ok so you have the choice, protect it or risk damaging your screen. You're free to choose what ever you like.
Go and have a look how many TZ owners have damaged their screen, then you'll know what I mean. -
Imo you shouldn't have to be spending extra money to buy something to protect your laptop's screen when the lid is shut, whether it's a cloth or your own balls. All laptops should be designed so this doesn't happen, plain and simple.

That may well be.
But its also solved by adding a few more rubber pads from the manufacturer's side.
And if you're honest, don't you want a laptop which is designed for use?
Also, if you read the first post, it was a week of light use.
I mean, a few more pads aren't expensive, they could easily be integrated. And its been done before.
Any additional measures you wish to take are fine and Sony will possibly like that too, but can't one expect a product which doesn't show this obvious sign of wear and tear if it costs a few hundred dollars and especially, as this proble does not exist on other previous models!!
We're now down to the question:
Have we got the right to buy a good product, or do we have to buy an imperfect one and then at our own inconvenience/cost ensure this design flaw increases tear and wear?
Additionally, Sony laptops are not cheap, its not a bargain price product. You buy it for the look some say (possible), I got my SZ for the power, couldn't find anything as small and powerfull, not that its impossible too build though, and also for quality. Now this little issue is a downside in regard to quality I'd say... -
I thought that Sony's had good build Quality! i need mine to be durable as i will be moving it around alot! There is no point or i would get a desktop! now i will have too consider a Dell 1530 again, well wait untill the new one comes out!
-
I've owned 10 laptops and I've never put a cloth between the screen and keyboard.
-
Owell lets just hope this is only 1 case of this problem and other people have no damage! -
also if the inexpensive piece of cloth must be used.. why does no manufacturer provides it .. by default.. with the notebook.. or even as an accessory!!
-
-
True, but you should never put anything on top of your notebook, it just isn't good period. Regardless, the paint should not be wearing away within a week.

.
Funny thing is it's still so fast and I easily squeeze 3 hours of battery life out of it, while the rest of the world is complaining about Asus battery life. -
I was about to say that it's not fair comparison of a brand new FW to 3 year old A6. My 6 month old FZ was already showing lot of signs of wear and tear as well, so it's expected, although I didn't even take it outside the house ever.
-
I was only joking that's why I put in the smiley. I'm nothing but happy with my Asus.
-
yeah this is a deal breaker for me, will probably end up going with the asus m50vm now
my qosmio has 4 pieces of rubber, only wear from rubbing is from my hands over the years.
pictures of this problem would actually be nice -
Yeah, that is kind of sad actually. Such a nice notebook and it's marred because Sony was too cheap to stick extra rubber feet on it.
-
Touché!
-
i actually want to see watsup with the discoloration. someone please put up pics.
-
So what can I do to fix this problem? Can I get these padded stickies? Or use a cloth?
-
The same thing happened to my TZ last year. It was very annoying to see such an oversight on such an expensive machine. BTW, my SR has four rubber pads on the edge that matches up with the palm rest. There are a total of 10 if you include the 8 on the lid and the two on either side the keyboard.
-
can someone put some pics on so that we can see how bad is the damage? thanks
-
Or the fancy way:

Or even the piece of foam that comes with it...
-
I am sure FW have more than 4.
My FZ have 10 - including..
One in each corners
2 on side of motion eye camera (pretty easy to miss)
2 on the bottom of the lid
2 on the side of the keyboard
And yeah, its painting is holding up well for me, after nearly 1 year of use. -
-
I have yet to see a single picture of this supposed issue. Anyone care to offer proof?
-
On FW picture on sony Website, I count 8 - I think whoever reported that there'
s only 4 missed the ones next to the motion eye, and 2 on the side. -
-
So far there is only one person complaining about the paint finish! I am still waiting on the picture!!
-
-
I've posted in the FW review thread a shot showing the location of all 8 rubber feet on my FW's screen.
No sign of any paintwork damage as yet.

You can clearly see there are more than 2 rubber feet. I'm ordering my FW.
