You might find it worthwhile using nLite to slipstream the new drivers on the install disc. It will allso upgrade the XP to SP3 prior to installation and save a lot of patching afterwards.

You didn't slipstream the correct AHCI or Matrix Storage Manager drivers for the ICH9M controller. That BSOD occurs when AHCI/RAID is enabled (it's enabled by default on the FW series) and Windows fails to load the correct drivers.

You can download the correct driver here and slipstream it with nLite.

    Hi Gore-M!

I got my FW11E 2 days ago, but I'm having some problems with it under Vista.. so I'm going to install XP as well.. Where did you get all the correct drivers from? Would you be so kind to hook me up with some links?

I'm gonna go try already anyway :D
    Cheers!

i did slip in the Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI-Controller with nLite..do I need to include others? I'm not sure what drivers to include and which not to.. gore-m, would you be so kind to list the once you needed to get the XP install to work? :)

I have just downgraded my FW-30/B (Japanese version) to XP SP2 (Eng) using nLite.

The WPrime runs about 37s with the P8400 (2.26 Ghz). However, I still don't have all the dirvers. I got the basic like Wifi (Intel 5100) and Bluetooth, etc. The biggest problem is still the ATI Mobility HD 3470 Driver. Still can't find a legitimate one yet.

OK , here is my driver pack for FW11E and XP .
I had an problem sort out all Intel drivers after so much testing I had an chaos in this .-)) So try highest one and you ll see - let me know which works good as first (thanks) ... There is problem to install Bluetooh , so follow way in txt , find last file and install driver with this - no with original installer .

After installation you can try DriverAgent , youll see a lots of drivers seems to be out date , but Im not able to find better drivers than I have and Im not sure about DriverAgent and paying for something what was originally for free . But If is here anyone who has money for spend (I dont have :)) ) it would be very nice update all and post this updates for us here lets our FW work perfect .-)

    thanks

Im not sure about you ... but when I was buying my FW , in specification was written ATI Mobility HD 3470 , but I have HD3400 inside (driver is included in pack - and it is not for 3400 only - so you can try it)

The device driver on my original Vista FW also said "ATI Radeom Mobility HD 3400 Series Drivers" but I think the hardware is HD 3470.

BTW I just found a full catalyst ATI driver for HD 3470 on a Toshiba Site (M300 XP Driver).

You may be able to edit the Setup file and use it for FW.

    argh! :( - i've slipped in the ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI-Controller on the windows xp install CD, but it's still giving me the same BSOD (0x0000007b , 0xf78de524 , 0x0000034 , 0.00000000 , 0.0000000) .. :(

do i really don't have to slip in any other drivers? :S

In pack is folder called : FOR Slipstream STOR_AllOS_f6flpy32_8.2.3.1001_PV_Intel This folder is for using with nlite ,I simply used Win XP with SP2 installation disc (no already slipstreamed or "cuted off" version , but full original version) and I added there ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI-Controller only . And it worked . So check your procedure again , maybe you are doing an little mistake anywhere .

Rest of pack is for using in XP only , I recommend to install all drivers and than SP3 .

Im afraid we can not use Sony Utilities from any other model for FW , I think it is the same situation like with drivers , there is an checker for model in every installer - I have tried this few times .

Im not sure right now (I dont have notebook with me right now) but I think volume works ..

The problem is .... I had a call with Sony Vaio support first - than I started to find solution by myself , I asked them if is possible to have driver for XP . They answered NO and they said "There wont be any support for this model and XP in future" and We can not help you with any problem with XP because there is not support for such problem .

But maybe it is an problem with keyboard , so there should be an solution .

It's a big big shame they force us to use vista even though xp is clearly faster, come on, 2008 and still with some whack software, what a pity... There is a solution forsure, hope you get it! If there is a way to get 90% of the funtions (something you already got?) I'll downgrade to xp, no doubt, I also wanna install linux (god why I chose a sony...)

I think that also for other brand is the same problem.
Before I using drivers of sz the volume works, I think that I must try other model driver...
Other problem... the resolution of webcam... is vga now...
Ahi Ahi I tell you that I hate vista??? :)

    Bluetooth again :
Im sorry I didnt write clear instruction because , I wrote this instruction for myself - I didnt except I will post drivers here .

So go into \win32\brcm dir and there use "Driver Package Installer" thats all , than - if it is needed - go to HW settings and use "automatic driver update" .

issue with Brightness keys *Fn5/6" :
Original settings is FN key + F5/F6 + use arrow keys to go UP or DOWN with brightness . But it doesnt work in XP and I think you can be relaxed with this issue , because I think these keys operate with utility in system not with monitor exactly (if is here anyone who still has Vista on FW , let us know) .. I tried system utility in Vista and I remember it was horrible . So if these keys have connection with this utility , be 100% relaxed with this issue .

Today i got everything working, but when i try to install last driver for some unknown HW, i get the right driver but then it asks me for a sonyNC.sy_ ore something like that.
Doing some reading i found out that this might be related to the FN key issue.
I also found out that the notenook uses a "Sony® Firmware Extension Parser (SEFP)" and that this should fix that issue. So i downloaded the EXE file of the SEFP and i try to extract the files in it, but it doesn't work..so ill continue to search for a solution, bacause i sure would like to be able to use the FN keys..

After hearing the horrors of Vista, I want to also downgrade to XP. However, after looking over this thread I'm quite overwhelmed. I'm not a computer expert, and given the troubles gore.m was having I'm second guessing it might not be worth it.

Is there any easy, step-by-step, way to do this?

It sound a lot more difficult then it is. I don't know if there is a step-by-step guide, but i can tell you, that you need to find the drivers for your pc, (if its the FW11 they are posted in this thread). And you need to make sure that you have a XP cd which has the SATA Drivers integrated.
But sometimes the cd's don't have that, so with a program which is quite easy to use you can integrate them to your own XP cd.
If you need help with that, or you want to know anything else, just ask...
because at the beginning things can be quite confusing. :)

Okey, I really need some help here. I got the same BSOD as gore.m did, and i downloaded this "correct driver", and implemented it in my xp disc using nLite. However, it will still give me the same BSOD as always. In nLite, i chose to
*Insert multiple driver folder* and chose the folder from the first link in bogarts quote. Though, after i clicked it i got a list with a whole bunch of drivers, all called something like
Intel (R) ICH10R SATA ACHI Controller
Intel (R) ICH7M/MDH SATA ACHI Controller
    etc.

By the looks of it, I'm supposed to pick the one called
Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA ACHI Controller, right?
So I did, and i manage to install XP right to the point where it reboots after install. I still get the same BSOD! Am i using the correct driver? Should i select more than one?

    Regards/

If you passed first loading of drivers and you choose partiton to install etc ... and after rebot youve got this message so I think it is not problem with sata driver . Because you can not go farther (without good driver) than to first loading of drivers .
So I think ... there is something wrong with your installation disc of XP .
    make sure :
1/ your disc is original XP , NOT any cuted off version !!
2/ your disc is in good condition
    3/ you did good burn

Ah okey, thanks for answer :)
Yes, the installation got completed, (first reboot went ok) and i got to choose languages and the timer said Installation will be complete in 39 minutes, and when it was complete the computer wants to reboot again to make the final steps, and this is where i get the BSOD. I have been trying with TinyXP though, a very cut off version, and later i also tried with another version that was also a bit cut off. Now ill try with a complete version. Thanks!
