I had installed a clean version of windows 7 x64 a month or so ago. It is fast and seems like a clean system. Very little issues until recently.

I noticed a few days ago my DVD reader was not working. It shows in device manager and has the latest driver according to an update attempt. It shows in my "computer" but just shows a generic CD:/ (E) there.

Then yesterday I was working with an external with a 1.5 TB to back up everything I have and it was working fine. As of last night it won't recognize the external any more.

Today I tried a restore point from a few weeks ago and get no improvement on either issue. The only possible problem I have found is a "base system device" driver is missing. I have tried to find a new driver but the computer can't find one. Any suggestions on how to go about making my Vaio play nice with Windows 7?

Check the Sony site, the FW (at least my 285 version) had a registry patch that fixed an error with the CD/DVD drive disappearing. There are several causes listed. Might be your issue. (check under your original OS)
